My Crazy Sexy Self-Care Planner

read all about it

Hi Sweet Friends,

I love you. I do.

And one of my absolute favorite things is tending to the people I care about. Making a scrumptious plant-happy dinner for family and friends, problem-solving with my team or colleagues and spending quality time caring for my disabled dog (#gobuddygo!) are just a few of the ways I show my love.

But sometimes, when I don’t take care of myself, doing for others can be too much.

Having a solid self-care base is the only way I can maintain my health, my business, my relationships and my sanity. And I bet I’m not alone, which is why I created a self-care planner for you. Download it for free below (I think it’ll help you as much as it helps me).

So what does self-care mean?

It’s simple—it’s about supporting yourself. Listening and tending to your needs, creating boundaries so that you don’t get exhausted, fueling your body instead of draining it and practicing the art of loving yourself. Scars, wounds, age spots and all. And in case you were wondering, self-care is not selfish—it’s responsible. You don’t serve yourself or anyone else (your dreams included!) if you’re too pooped.

Now, I know we all have a lot on our plates. But did you also know that you’ll be more effective if you start your day with energy-creating practices rather than diving in and pushing till you drop? That’s why it’s so important to carve out sacred, non-negotiable self-care time. So how can we do that?

Find what works for you and be gentle. Perhaps begin with 10-15 minutes of centering meditation—or even just words of kindness. I like to start my day by saying “Good morning, sweet Kris! I love you,” that always puts a smile on my face. Explore whatever makes you feel loved, centered and cared for.

What self-care looks like for me:

  • Honoring the real Kris, not the Kris I think I should be one day
  • Hiking at least 3 times per week (stretching too)
  • Journaling
  • Listening to guided meditations & uplifting spiritual talks while snuggling with my favorite blanket
  • Nourishing my body with green juice, green smoothies and greens
  • Lights out at 10pm, eyes open at 6am—sleep rocks
  • Accepting help from others
  • Releasing resentment, anger and frustration—the mental blocks that make me cranky
  • Connecting with my close circle of friends and family, and not feeling guilty if I can’t connect with everyone else
  • Watching movies that inspire me, while cuddling with my dogs and my man
  • Taking an Epsom salt bath with a few drops of essential oils

What self-care is not:

  • Forcing myself to stay awake to answer every single email
  • Saying yes to obligations I dread
  • Hanging out with people who drain me
  • Grudgingly slogging to the gym because women’s magazines tell me that my ass should be 3 inches higher
  • Demolishing all of the cake when I’m sad (all of it)
  • Having a harsher set of standards for myself than I have for others
  • Drinking too much, too often
  • Smoking. Period. Ever. End of story. I quit that over a decade ago and will never go back
  • Helping and serving others more than I help or serve myself

Plan, Act, Repeat

When it comes to long-term solutions, creating new habits is key. Guess what? I wasn’t born drinking green juice, but after years of practice it’s a daily do. When you’re embarking on something new, especially something as important as self-care, set yourself up for success by making a short, do-able plan (not an epic to-do list!). Having a clear picture of what you’re going to do before you actually do it will make the changes much easier.

Planning my success is how I run my health and my business—and I’m the Chief Unicorn of both. So whether you’re committing to a brisk walk in the mornings, juicing before work or getting a massage on the weekend—mapping out your goals and when you’ll fit them into your schedule is how you’ll make them happen, captain!

To get you started, I created this downloadable Self-Care Planner. Get yours below.

In the planner, you’ll get a snapshot of what a week of nourishing your mind, body and spirit can look like, along with a few suggestions to get you started. You’ll also get an affirmation from me each day, and space to plan your self-care for the morning, afternoon and/or evening (the timing and frequency is up to you). Plus, at the end of each day, you can write about how taking care of your glorious self feels. (Hint: Awesome!)

Your turn: Share one self-care action you’ll take this week in the comments below.

Peace & planning,

Last year my daughter went through alcohol withdrawal – one year now and she is thriving!!! After her process, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. My sister and I took him to all treatments and procedures and he is now cancer free. I am completely drained. I have no energy to do the things I know I need to get over this bump. I am far better at caring for others than for myself so … thank you for the reminder to listen to my own issues and not undermine them. This has given me a real push to stop, think and focus. Namaste.

    Dear Kris,
you are 100% right!! In my case I’ve been doing volleyball all my life but quit 5 years ago when I finished my first degree. Besides missing the championships, I really missed training. Due to many reasons I wasn’t able to train properly for years! but lately I committed, bought a few stuff and start working out at home 3/4 times a week!
    I feel soooooooo much better!
Than, add the right omega 3 and a good night sleep, I feel like a baby!
so you can give the 100% in every other thing you have to do!

  4. Mary says:

I’m going to release the anger I have at my sister. I’ve carried it for years and it’s exhausting. I’m realizing that it’s really not that important to stay angry with her. Hopefully, we can get back to loving each other again without all the tension involved.

  5. Linda Jordan-Clark says:

  10. Amy K. Furler says:

THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…MUCH!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!! And there’s no smoke-blowin’ going on here. I ‘met’ you through Hay House Writer’s Workshop last year, even before my diagnosis in December of breast kanser (see what I did there?? ;)). It’s been SO overwhelming among other things and whenever I need to reconnect with my sanity I pick up one of your books or come back to your site/blog/videos/etc. and you help me once more. My gratitude for you, yours and all of the FABULOUS connections, resources, good cheer, rawness is boundless. You are a well-established beacon in the darkness for me, and now MY spouse and friends. Now I am facing a choice between two chemo plans and am utterly terrified which can be so paralyzing. I am getting there. YOU ARE ABSOLUTLEY RIGHT, THAT SELF-CARE IS A RESPONSIBILITY. I think that’s such a tough nut to crack, for womyn especially, as so many of us were raised to hang our Self-worth hats on our ability to care for others before and in stead of ourselves. I just want to take a moment to convey how valuable what you are offering here IS to someone like me right here, right now. You are teaching me things and giving me things that I will use perhaps for the rest of my life. And you do it with and through humor and being real about shit–that’s just magic, girl. From one Unicorn in Charge in Training to the Beacon Unicorn…GRATITUDE, GRATITUDE, GRATITUDE…..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please continue to take good care of yourself and yours. Love you, Amy xoxox

  12. Self-care is SO important! And as busy women we often times neglect ourselves first. I find journaling and meditating to be very helpful. I meditate every day for at least 30 minutes, I plan on purchasing your mediation guide to add to my practice. I LOVE the self-care planner, downloading it now!

  13. Mary says:

As a nurse for over 40 years, I acknowledge that it is easier to “care” for others than it is for myself. I get that. I love helping others. I know I can connect with others in a kind and gentle way, in a way that is supportive and positive. I am ready to be a leader by setting an example of self care for others. I’m wondering if maybe I can do this…

  14. Beth says:

This week I will make a habit of listening to one of your meditations first thing every morning, so I can start my day at peace and in balance. I will listen to another of your wonderful meditations before every bed time, to relax and let go of anxiety and conflict, in preparation for a restful sleep. Thank you for all you do to help us, Kris!

  16. Laurel says:

Kris, I would like to express how much I appreciate and love who you are and how much you help all of us, but everyone has already said it. I started following you before my Feb. diagnosis with cancer. I try to follow the green juice regiment but struggle with the “greeness.” I an on my 3rd month of my 4 month chemo prescription. I also struggle with self care, sometimes that amounts to simply laying on the couch trying to sip water.
That being said, thank you Kris, for your love and contribution to our wellbeing. After I get out I feel my pity pot and get back into you writings I am ‘lifted’ and encouraged.

    Thank you
    Laurel

  17. Al says:

    Kris,

I saw you on Oprah Super Soul session lessons. Amazing!!!
I feel better by just READING your heartfelt motivational tips and life ideologies. I am excited about reading, writing, and Accepting ‘the ME that I am today’. I have lived my life aspiring about the future me and her Super life. I realize now I cannot workout hoping for the Future Me. I have to learn to love the ‘me I see in the mirror each and everyday of life.’ I am super sexy cool. Thanks Kris. I look forward to this adventure and new course in my life.

  18. Teresa Callahan says:

Thank you, Kris! I love your inspiration, wit and common sense. You are like a beacon!!! Shine on!! Love, xox, Teresa

  19. Nony Morgan says:

Hello my darling… you’re an angel bearing sanity-restoring gifts!

Perfect timing for the Self-Care Planner – and thanks for suggesting the baby steps to get myself back on track for taking better care of my SELF. Otherwise I would be stressing out trying to do EVERYTHING I think I ‘should’ be doing.

So here’s my gift to myself… I’m following your example of “in bed by 10 and up at 6”. I don’t function well on the 5 or 6 hours of sleep I’ve been getting. And because it keeps me centered and more productive, I’m recommitting to starting each day with meditation and journaling.
