Hi Sweet Friends,
I love you. I do.
And one of my absolute favorite things is tending to the people I care about. Making a scrumptious plant-happy dinner for family and friends, problem-solving with my team or colleagues and spending quality time caring for my disabled dog (#gobuddygo!) are just a few of the ways I show my love.
But sometimes, when I don’t take care of myself, doing for others can be too much.
Having a solid self-care base is the only way I can maintain my health, my business, my relationships and my sanity. And I bet I’m not alone, which is why I created a self-care planner for you. Download it for free below (I think it’ll help you as much as it helps me).
So what does self-care mean?
It’s simple—it’s about supporting yourself. Listening and tending to your needs, creating boundaries so that you don’t get exhausted, fueling your body instead of draining it and practicing the art of loving yourself. Scars, wounds, age spots and all. And in case you were wondering, self-care is not selfish—it’s responsible. You don’t serve yourself or anyone else (your dreams included!) if you’re too pooped.
Now, I know we all have a lot on our plates. But did you also know that you’ll be more effective if you start your day with energy-creating practices rather than diving in and pushing till you drop? That’s why it’s so important to carve out sacred, non-negotiable self-care time. So how can we do that?
Find what works for you and be gentle. Perhaps begin with 10-15 minutes of centering meditation—or even just words of kindness. I like to start my day by saying “Good morning, sweet Kris! I love you,” that always puts a smile on my face. Explore whatever makes you feel loved, centered and cared for.
What self-care looks like for me:
- Honoring the real Kris, not the Kris I think I should be one day
- Hiking at least 3 times per week (stretching too)
- Journaling
- Listening to guided meditations & uplifting spiritual talks while snuggling with my favorite blanket
- Nourishing my body with green juice, green smoothies and greens
- Lights out at 10pm, eyes open at 6am—sleep rocks
- Accepting help from others
- Releasing resentment, anger and frustration—the mental blocks that make me cranky
- Connecting with my close circle of friends and family, and not feeling guilty if I can’t connect with everyone else
- Watching movies that inspire me, while cuddling with my dogs and my man
- Taking an Epsom salt bath with a few drops of essential oils
What self-care is not:
- Forcing myself to stay awake to answer every single email
- Saying yes to obligations I dread
- Hanging out with people who drain me
- Grudgingly slogging to the gym because women’s magazines tell me that my ass should be 3 inches higher
- Demolishing all of the cake when I’m sad (all of it)
- Having a harsher set of standards for myself than I have for others
- Drinking too much, too often
- Smoking. Period. Ever. End of story. I quit that over a decade ago and will never go back
- Helping and serving others more than I help or serve myself
Plan, Act, Repeat
When it comes to long-term solutions, creating new habits is key. Guess what? I wasn’t born drinking green juice, but after years of practice it’s a daily do. When you’re embarking on something new, especially something as important as self-care, set yourself up for success by making a short, do-able plan (not an epic to-do list!). Having a clear picture of what you’re going to do before you actually do it will make the changes much easier.
Planning my success is how I run my health and my business—and I’m the Chief Unicorn of both. So whether you’re committing to a brisk walk in the mornings, juicing before work or getting a massage on the weekend—mapping out your goals and when you’ll fit them into your schedule is how you’ll make them happen, captain!
To get you started, I created this downloadable Self-Care Planner. Get yours below.
In the planner, you’ll get a snapshot of what a week of nourishing your mind, body and spirit can look like, along with a few suggestions to get you started. You’ll also get an affirmation from me each day, and space to plan your self-care for the morning, afternoon and/or evening (the timing and frequency is up to you). Plus, at the end of each day, you can write about how taking care of your glorious self feels. (Hint: Awesome!)
Your turn: Share one self-care action you’ll take this week in the comments below.
Peace & planning,
Kris, my sister Gail Larsen loves you! Come hike the Smoky Mountains with me. Thank you for your daring.
Thank you for the wonderful post. Such an important lesson sent in the most loving way.
I be taking time this weekend for myself review some upcoming commitments and eliminate some. Thank you
One way I plan to care for myself is to stop holding myself to impossibly high standards. It only sets me up for failure and makes me feel miserable.
Dear Kris,
Thank you for the constant amazing inspiration and for the awesome checklist, its always great to have a plan and a routine!
A while back i had to make a radical commitment to self love, to ensure i get back my health first of all. So among the goals and objectives i set during that time, number one was “Learn to love myself no matter what”. It still is.
The one action that has made a huge impact is regularly asking myself during the day ” How do i feel?” and always choosing to do what it takes to steer my feelings towards peace, joy, acceptance and so on. With practice it became much easier. After doing this, i found i am much happier, most of the time and i give a much greater version of myself to my loved ones, clients and the world.
Love and many thanks.

Kris!
Everything you do is exactly what I want to do with my life and the messages I want to spread. I’m going to school for Natural Resource Conservation because I’m insanely passionate about the environment and sustainability, but I am also passionate about wellness, self-love, animals, veganism, and positive, natural living! You are my role model. I read all of your weekly love notes and love learning from you.
Thank you for everything you do 🙂 I hope to one day spread the wealth of knowledge around like you do!
Kelly
Thank you for sharing this, Kris! You’re so inspirational!
Taking time to go on long walks or bike rides with my son. 😉
I am trying to do mindfulness with my eating.
As mothers, wives, daughters, loving, caring people we will always put our needs to the bottom of the pile. I learnt the hard way that you have got to put yourself near the top because otherwise you cannot function properly. Then you begin to fail the people you are so desperate to help.
Thank you for providing the inspiration and motivation to stand back, see that we need to look after ourselves and then get on and do it. Its not selfish to look after yourself its a necessity. Best wishes to everyone out there heeding your advice. X
Kris- thank you for the loving reminder! Spring is here, maybe a bit cold in the North East and I will be up and out early tomorrow! Part of my self care ritual, which I’ve neglected, is taking a walk in the yard in the mornings, before anyone is up, warm cup of tea in hand, loving the dew between my toes and the company of the birds, fox and deer in the woods. I am blessed. I too, like Tammy below, have been plagued with tummy trouble- probably anxiety, and I know a little self care- I share lots of your non-negotiables and time outdoors goes a long way! xo Margaret
I love you So Much!!!
I am stealing this: Good morning, sweet Kris! I love you! (using my name instead, lol)
Dear Kris,
You are an inspiration. Honestly. I saw you at I Can Do It in Toronto a few years ago and bought Crazy Sexy Kitchen. It was like reading candy. Every time I receive an email from you, I smile…and some days I just don’t want to but I do anyway. Thank you for being so you. Self care in a busy life is a wonderful challenge. I commit to spending some tea time with my girlfriends and having a few great belly laughs. I didn’t realize how much I miss them until I saw this. Thank you, Kris!! 🙂
I’m so happy my blog reminded you to check in with your pals! Have fun. 🙂 kc
Thanks Kris for shining a light on this subject and for the self-care planner. I’m taking care of myself this week by getting enough sleep–you’re right, it rocks! I’m also planning one home spa night per week–shut off the electronics, take that long bath with Epsom salts and rosemary oil, then lotion for my skin including a foot massage–spa night.
You are so beautiful sharing this sacred stuff, if only we learnt how to nurture ourselves as young girls!
Thank you for being such an inspiration! I am a 9-year breast cancer survivor (whoot whoot!) and after my treatments I decided to become a Reiki Master in order to help heal others. My business is going strong, and I’ve added daily self-Reiki treatments to my self-care regimen, and it’s been amazing! I’ve recently committed to adding more exercise and yoga to that regimen, plus I’ve also purchased your new Juicing book (can’t wait to give those recipes a try!) and I love your Meditation for Busy People. Thank you for being such an inspiration with your own healing journey!
I love the idea of going on three hikes each week. I’m going to try to add spending time outdoors at least twice in the week (Saturdays are always outdoors!).
This week I will go back to yoga class! My hubby had an accident and life has been upside down for a few weeks. Now that it is settling, I will return to yoga, and daily meditation.
Thanks so much for everything, beautiful Unicorn Kris! XOXO
I love YOU, too! (really… you are the best). Thank you for your endless inspiration that hits home every time. xo
I’m getting a neck massage after lugging around a back pack all last week, I could really use it. I’m also getting a pedicure today because along with that backpack came tons of walking.
Hi, Kris, Been a follower since the beginning and love how you continue to show up “as a message” . Self care….perfect timing. Although I am aware of that in my daily life, lately I need reminders. My husband had a stroke (his 2nd. His 1st was 14 yrs ago) 3/18. I have been able to stay with him for which I am eternally grateful, from day one in ICU and now in Rehab. As he learns to do everything again, walk, speak, etc., I realized how many times he is told, when looking to stand or sit with balance, to “find his center” …. And it occurred to me that was a message for me, too. It is so important for me to stay balanced, connected to my Center…..and part of that is to practice self care. So thank you, Kris, for this timely reminder. You continue to be such a light! Namaste.
Thank you for sharing this with us all, Diana—it is a light for me today. Sending you love. kc
