CBD Oil: Everything You Need to Know

read all about it

Hiya Gorgeous!

Is it just me, or did CBD oil (cannabidiol oil) totally explode over the last year? I see new articles practically every day about its miraculous benefits, including claims that it may even provide hope for patients who have exhausted their conventional treatment options. People are using it for everything from anxiety and seizure disorders to psoriasis and pain management. I’ve gotta say—I’m just blown away by the exciting possibilities that CBD oil has to offer.

Since this is such a hot topic (and I have a feeling that you’re just as curious about it as I am!), I asked our Crazy Sexy Nutrition Director, Jen Reilly, to dig into it and give us the 411. Keep in mind that research is currently underway and findings are still emerging. But you know us—we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for new info and sharing updates with you as soon as we get ‘em.

The good news is, there’s already a ton of fascinating and helpful information out there about CBD oil—and that’s exactly what we’re about to dive into.

Take it away, Jen!

CBD Oil: Everything You Need to Know

by Crazy Sexy Nutrition Director Jen Reilly, RD

Thanks, Kris! Nothing gets me more excited than the possibility of simple supplemental solutions to common health issues, so I’ve been closely following the CBD oil news for a while now. Among my nutrition patients, I’ve seen CBD oil help with anxiety and psoriasis when nothing else seemed to work. One patient has even been able to reduce her anxiety meds by half! The internet is also full of anecdotal evidence pointing to the potential benefits of CBD oil—including everything from pain management and nausea relief during chemotherapy to freedom from colitis and other inflammatory digestive disorders.

As Kris pointed out, human scientific research is still in the very early phases. This is especially relevant when it comes to determining a safe and effective dosage of CBD oil, as well as understanding the possible side effects. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t get excited about its potential benefits (Kris and I sure are!), but I urge you to take caution and work with an integrative doc if you’re thinking about taking it—just like you should with any medication or supplement!

But first, what is CBD oil?

CBD oil is a naturally occurring chemical compound typically processed from the hemp plant (though it’s also found in marijuana—more on that later!). It can be taken orally—under the tongue, in food and drinks, or inhaled with a vape pen. It can also be applied topically as a salve or cream.

So, what’s the difference between CBD and THC?

Hemp and marijuana both come from the Cannabis sativa plant family, and the key difference between the two is their THC content. THC, like CBD, is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in Cannabis sativa plants. Marijuana has a high percentage of THC, which is psychoactive and well-known for the “high” it produces. Hemp, on the other hand, has a low THC percentage (0.3% or less). So, CBD extracted from hemp (and with no added components) has no psychoactive effect.

Both medical marijuana and CBD oil may be prescribed to treat certain health conditions. But, medical marijuana is still marijuana—it has a high THC content and is only legal in certain states. CBD oil, however, should be legal to consume and distribute in the United States as long as it comes from hemp. That said, many laws are still new or unclear, so research your state’s regulations to be sure.

Ok, but what is CBD oil used for?

Time to dive into the good stuff!

Now, to effectively explain the potential benefits of CBD oil, I’ve gotta introduce you to the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS regulates and balances many functions of the body. But, when it gets out of whack because of stress, poor diet or too many free radicals (think: exposure to toxins), you may experience some nasty symptoms—I’m talkin’ increased anxiety, an upset digestive system, inflammation, a weakened immune system and increased sensitivity to pain. Ouch!

Under normal circumstances, we produce our own endocannabinoids that bind to our ECS receptors and keep our bodies in balance. But, when stress or inflammation ensue, endocannabinoid production decreases. And that’s where the star of our story comes in to save the day! CBD oil can stimulate the ECS receptors, which supplements a naturally occurring system and helps your body find proper balance again. Pretty cool, huh?

As I explained above, research about the benefits of CBD oil is ongoing, but anecdotal reports (both from individuals experimenting on their own and doctors who prescribe CBD oil) show lots of promise.

Here are some of the benefits and uses we’re aware of so far:

Epilepsy

An estimated 30% of people with epilepsy are resistant to conventional pharmaceutical treatments. But, the anticonvulsant properties of CBD oil provide new hope for relief. The cannabinoids act on receptors in the brain to alter brain chemistry and reduce seizure activity. Plus, CBD oil also happens to be free of the serious negative effects that come along with many traditional anticonvulsant medications.

There are plenty of anecdotal accounts of people using CBD oil to treat epilepsy, but one in particular is particularly incredible—and touching. Charlotte Figi was having 50 seizures a day, some lasting for 2-4 hours. She couldn’t walk or swallow, and she wasn’t responding to conventional medications. At just age 5, she was suffering and her body continues to decline. But, when her mom started giving her CBD oil (with very low THC) under her tongue, the seizures stopped almost immediately. Now they only occur 2-3 times a month, mostly in her sleep. By age 6, Charlotte was walking again, riding her bicycle, feeding herself and talking. She continues to thrive and be an example of the power of CBD oil. You can read more about her touching story here.

Intestinal Inflammation

Inflammatory digestive issues are no fun—and many conventional “treatments” do nothing more than put a temporary band-aid on the symptoms (rather than address the root of the issue). CBD oil, however, may be able to prevent inflammation in the first place! By activating certain ECS receptors connected to intestinal health, it appears to increase movement in the digestive tract and balance stomach acid in a way that can help normalize digestion, prevent constipation and reduce nausea and vomiting. Larger human studies are in the works to test effectiveness and dosage so docs can better prescribe CBD oil for their patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Anxiety and Depression

While not completely understood yet, CBD oil is thought to stimulate ECS serotonin receptors in a way that can positively increase serotonin levels and improve mental health. Many folks taking it—for anxiety or depression specifically, or relief from something else—report feeling an increased sense of calm, less irritability, renewed interest in favorite activities and an elevated mood. In 2011, one small human study (24 people) showed that people with anxiety who took CBD oil felt less nervous about public speaking.

In addition to its ability to mitigate anxiety and depression, CBD oil can also help reduce delusions and hallucinations associated with schizophrenia. Plus, it has far fewer possible negative side effects than the medications often prescribed for these conditions.

Pain

CBD oil may help reduce chronic pain by impacting ECS receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters. It also appears to block the absorption of anandamide (a pain regulator), thereby reducing pain sensitivity.

As you know, conventional pain medications come with a laundry list of side effects, and some can be addictive. Because CBD oil doesn’t have the same caveats, doctors are feeling more and more comfortable recommending it to patients with chronic pain.

Chemotherapy Side Effects

While the research is very limited and mostly includes animal** and test-tube studies, there are several accounts of patients using CBD oil to reduce chemotherapy side effects. People have reported relief from nausea, vomiting and even neuropathic pain. There are also accounts of CBD oil boosting appetite and preventing weight loss, as well as promoting emotional well-being.

One area of concern for researchers is that the receptors CBD oil inhibits to prevent nausea and vomiting may be important for other brain functionality. For now, the side effects appear to be minimal, but more sophisticated human research is needed (study). As always, work with your doc—and for further information on how CBD oil can help relieve the side effects of chemotherapy.

Acne and Psoriasis

Did you know that there are even ECS receptors in your skin (they’re everywhere!)? Well, it turns out that when CBD oil is applied topically, it stops the quick cell turnover responsible for both acne and psoriatic flare-ups. That combined with CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties make it a promising treatment for both acne and psoriasis. Check in with your doc to determine how much CBD oil and which application method you should use for acne or psoriasis.

There are a lot of exciting uses for CBD oil in the skin care realm. Many companies are starting to use it in their products to combat acne, calm inflammation (think: puffiness, redness, etc.) and more. Stay tuned for an in-depth exploration of this topic by our fabulous Beauty Editor, Danielle Shine!

How much CBD oil should I take?

While many integrative doctors are recommending CBD oil to their patients and seeing results, clear dosage guidelines haven’t been set by the medical community. Dr. Robert Rountree, a CBD oil pioneer and expert, recommends 10 milligrams a day for treating anxiety and pain—but your dosage will vary based on what you’re treating. Your doc can help you determine which dosage and form is best for you.

Where can I buy CBD oil and what kind should I get?

Because of the murky laws around growing Cannabis sativa in several states, some companies are producing CBD oil in a lab so they can make a profit without breaking any laws. Integrative docs discourage using these synthetic preparations because they often contain toxins, come with a list of possible side effects like agitation and rapid heartbeat, and are less potent than the naturally cultivated varieties.

Because the CBD oil industry is unregulated and full of companies trying to get a piece of the pie, it’s important to look for pure, high-quality sources that are pharmacist-formulated, third-party tested and have a trusted purity verification (check the labels for all those buzz words!). Examples of trusted brands include Green Roads, Sisters of the Valley and Charlotte’s Web.

What are the side effects of CBD oil?

There are few known side effects of CBD oil to date. One study lists tiredness, diarrhea, and changes in weight and appetite as possible side effects, so keep those in mind and adjust dosage with your doc if you’re experiencing any uncomfortable reactions. Also, it’s important to note that certain medications may interact with CBD oil, including heart medications, antibiotics and allergy meds—all the more reason to work with a professional as you move forward!

The CBD oil industry is booming and more research comes out every day. But, what we know now is that this simple, naturally occurring remedy has the potential to help many people find relief from an array of health challenges—and that’s incredibly exciting. I hope to see CBD oil become a mainstream treatment in the near future. Until then, I encourage you to do your research, work with your doctor and check back in on this post for new info!

Wow! Thank you, Jen. That was super helpful and informative.

I’m a firm believer in the power of diet and lifestyle practices to keep us healthy and even manage serious health challenges (in conjunction with conventional treatment). But, sometimes we need a little extra help—and there’s nothing wrong with that. The promise that CBD oil shows to bring relief and answers fills me with so much hope, and I can’t wait to see what it has in store for us.

I hope you’ll bookmark this post so you can refer back to it—we’ll keep it updated as more research emerges!

Your turn: Have you tried CBD oil? If so, we’d love to know about your experience and which brands you’ve tried! Or if you haven’t tried it, are you interested in learning more about it?

Peace and radical remedies,

Wondering if CBD oils cause symptoms in people with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome?

    • Jen Reilly, RD says:

Hi Susan! From what I understand, CHS results from exposure in sensitive individuals to the organic pesticide Azadirachtin, derived from neem oil sprayed on the plants without following the proper spray cycle. If this is correct, CBD oil from plants that haven’t been sprayed incorrectly shouldn’t be a problem. However, I’m not able to find info online about which CBD oils may or may not have been produced from plants with that pesticide. If you’re interested in taking CBD oil, I’d recommend working with an integrative doc and doing lots of research on pesticides and other processing methods for the oils you’re wanting to try. Hope that helps! xo

  2. Dawn Engler says:

Hi Kris, You nailed a relative issue for me, again! I’ve been fighting with plantar fasciitis for almost 2.5 years. When walking causes pain so intense, you’d rather not, the additional problems are not fun. Weight gain, moodiness, low self-esteem, you get the picture.
I started with CBD Oil about 6 months ago for pain management. The results have varied. I’m in Colorado and the amount of stores that make this and “other” things available is overwhelming. What I’ve been sticking to is local grown and the company is 43 CBD Solutions outside of Durango. My plantar problems added heel spurs to the picture and that pain is disabling. I was getting aggravated that the CBD wasn’t working and it was suggested I stop taking it and measure the results.
WELL, in less than 1 week of no CBD the mood swings came back with a vengeance (menopause), my entire foot pain came back (not just the heel) and I came to the conclusion that while not 100% relief, CBD was enough to allow me movement in my life again. I ranch sit for 100 alpacas and not being able to walk is just not an option.
There’s my story! I like that I get some relief and I keep surgery and prescription pain meds OUT of my life.

    • kris says:

Hey Dawn! Thanks for sharing your story. I know it can be frustrating when you don’t see results right away—I’m glad you took the time to listen to your body and figure out the best solution for you. Say hi to the alpacas for me! xo

  3. Khadoma says:

Yes yes yes! Right there with you Jenn and Kris I have been activley educating myself in all things CBD for the past year, and taking and sharing an amazing oil that has changed my life, and many others. It is unique bc of ots bioavailability. As we know, we are what we absorb. I am blown away at its possibilities in health and wellness.

  4. Kim says:

    Hi!
I’ve been using Hempworx CBD oil since right after Christmas 2017.
    My results are simply amazing.
Over the past couple years I’ve had chronic Larangitis with Bronchitis. I missed so much I thought I would lose my job. I started taking it right after my last round of this. I haven’t had either of these once since I started.
I literally hadn’t sleep through the night in at least 15 years. After a couple weeks on CBD oil I sleep soundly all night. I’m thrilled.
My seasonal allergies have improved dramatically.
I was having chronic shoulder and upper back pain. The CBD oil almost immediately takes all of the pain away.
I take the 750 and Have ramped up to half a dropper full 2x a day. Morning and bedtime.
I also use it on my dogs and cats. There is a Pet version too.
Helps my Lab who is terrified of fireworks and thunder (even rain).
Along with a Thunder shirt we have had great results. It relieves pain in my elderly cat who has chronic stomach problems.
I have a number of health issues and am weaning off many meds.
I won’t go without my CBD oil now.
It has improved my quality f life dramatically.

  5. Alinda says:

Any thoughts on how this can help with Parkinson’s Disease?

    • Jen Reilly, RD says:

Hi Alinda! CBD oil is currently being researched for its effectiveness in slowing the progression of Parkinson’s. The endocannabinoid system may very well be affected by CBD oil in protecting neurons, which may translate into fewer tremors, better balance, and better sleep. As of now, CBD oil may help improve quality of life for people with Parkinson’s by reducing symptoms, and I suspect we will learn more in the not-too-distant future. I’d still recommend checking in with an integrative doc as they may help guide people with Parkinson’s in trying some brands or dosages to see if any improvement is found. We will certainly keep you posted if we learn more! xo – Jen

  6. Monica H. says:

Rosebud CBD oil is what we use. It helps with my daughters migraines.

  7. sheridan traner says:

After witnessing my husband’s success using CBD salve for his bum knee pain and mobility, I tried it on my arthritic fingers. Right away pain diminished and movement increased. There are many different brands with many different carrier oils so it’s important to read labels. Some work better than others for my condition, but until I find a better brand I mainly use organic PURE CBD Exchange products. I take a capsule or drops of CBD oil before going to sleep. I found that taking CBD in the morning can sometimes render me confused for a while. Ingesting CBD at night gives me a great night’s sleep, every time! Overall, taking CBD oil has not only calmed my arthritis pain but also calmed my nerves. I eat well, don’t smoke anything and I don’t drink. But I use CBD oil and recommend it to anyone looking for natural relief for whatever ails you!

    • kris says:

That’s fantastic, Sheridan! I’m so happy to hear that it’s helping both you and your husband—and that you’ve figured out the best time of day to take it. That’s so important and certainly takes some experimentation. Sending hugs!

  8. Amy Sloane says:

Hi! I’ve been doing research on CBD oil for a few months, trying to decide whether to try it for chronic migraines. There’s a website called cbdoilusers.com that has a lot of helpful info. I also joined a Facebook group to learn from user experience. It’s not always easy to work with an integrative doc – they are expensive and don’t take insurance. It’s been a hard decision for me to make to try it without the support of my doctors. But I’m also so tempted to try it after learning if it’s potential.

    • Jen Reilly, RD says:

Hi Amy! Sounds like you’re really doing your research! You’d be surprised how many conventional docs (who take insurance, yay!) are also getting on board with CBD oil. So, that could be another avenue for you to research. Even when working with docs, some folks try CBD oil creams first before oral preparations as a way to ease into testing out possible side effects. Perhaps ask at your local health food store to see if they have docs they recommend for some of the supplements they sell? Best of luck and best of health to you on your healing journey! xo

      • USAsusie says:

On that note – I too have found that most integrative docs do not take health insurance. It becomes quite costly and can be quite prohibitive for many to benefit from their care. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions in this regard?

  9. Christine says:

There is a wonderful resource to learn all about CBD oil in a docuseries called ‘The Sacred Plant’ – just google or youtube it to get info. This docuseries goes into extremely specific detail of the different ways to use it, how it is processed (good & bad), additives/purity, how it has been proven to help with different diseases/pain, etc.

  10. Margo Henderson says:

Hi and Great Article!!! I’m 57 and fractured my arm in May 2018. I had an x-ray last week just shy of 10 weeks since my injury. My ortho Dr was surprised at the healing of the break and said I was above the curve and then discharged me. I credit a couple of things; first, CBD daily for pain and fracture healing (there’s a study in Israel supporting its use for this) and my diet. I’ve been pretty diligent to try and get 20 grams of protein per meal. I’m also a believer in turmeric as an anti-inflammatory and takes turmeric shots everyday…thanks Dr Hyman! Again, thanks for this! I’ll be forwarding it to a whole bunch of my people!!!

  11. I was using CBD oil for knee pain and within 3 months my blood platelet count lowered to the point that my doctor sent me to a hemotologist. After Discontinuing the CBD oil my platelet count returned to normal. It worked for pain but the side effects are not worth it. There is research concerning platelet issues with CBD oil. Luckily my knee pain has diminished and can be managed with topical agents. As a stage four cancer survivor blood counts are monitored so that is how we found out.

    • Jen Reilly, RD says:

Hi Karen! I’m so glad you were on top of your health and figured this out! Such a good reminder to always check in with your doc when trying something new. xo – Jen

  12. I have been using the organic 300 mg water-soluble CBD drops for almost a year for joint pain and focus. It really works! I usually order it from American Shaman online (they offer 25% off discounts occasionally, if you are on their mailing list). The dosage I use is about 5 to 7.5 mg once a day and it does the trick. I sleep like a baby using it, so if you have insomnia or menopause problems with sleeping, this could really help!

    • kris says:

Thanks for the suggestion, Janie! I’ll check them out. Glad you’re getting better sleep—it’s so important! Big hugs 🙂

  13. David Dixon says:

    Hi Kris!
Progression free after a Mantle Cell Lymphoma diagnosis in 2009. Aggressive chemo followed by a Bone Marrow Transplant accomplished with my own perepheral blood stem cells. Have experienced late term effects of continuing fatigue, pherepheral nueropathy, over all body aches, suppressed immune system. I take a lot of vitamins with very good results, but still have the fatigue and neuropathy. Tried CBD oil from NuLeaf Naturals out of Colorado with some success. Started with using it everyday for about a month. Felt results were marginal, but helped, probably not as much as the hype promised. Cut back to only when really in pain. Over time, (approximately 12 months,) I find I don’t have the overall aches I was experiencing. I rest easier, so it helps a little with the fatigue. My guess is that the CBD oil has stimulated my body’s own natural systems and has helped in that way. From what I’ve read, an advantage is to be able to self regulate dosages, as everyone’s experience will be different, that less is sometimes better, and one cannot overdose on the CBD Oil.
I’m in Michigan, a Medical Marijuana state. My family Dr. , ( Who really isn’t one much for holistic remedies,) was receptive to my inquiry as to if it could give me some relief, was very adamant about needing to apply and get a Medical Marijuana card because of the confusion and lack of consistencies in the laws, even though CBD Oil is supposed to be legal in all 50 states.

    • kris says:

It sounds like you’ve really done your research and taken the time to figure out what works for you, David. That’s wonderful! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Mwah!

    • Jeanne says:

I’m from Michigan too, and you don’t need a marijuana license for CBD as it’s legal in all 50 states. I’ve been using for over 1 1/2 years and love it!

  14. Lisa S. says:

Tried the CBD oil recently for menstrual cramps. It took away the cramps, but I ended up with a 4-5 day migraine. I don’t get migraines normally. Hmm. I can’t do it. Regular food-based products like hemp powder or hulled seeds agree with me, but I must have an intolerance. The CBD oil I had was at local cafe/dispensary in a cold brew coffee. Maybe I’d have better results with topical version? I tend to do well with turmeric/black pepper, ginger, and fennel for my occasional pain or menstrual cramps.

    • Jen Reilly, RD says:

Really interesting, Lisa! I’m so sorry you had a negative reaction. If you decide to try CBD oil again, definitely work with a doc to make sure you get the right brand, dosage, and in the right form that’s best for you. xo! – Jen

    • Linda says:

Lisa S. why don’t you try raspberry leaf tea for your cramps. That always worked for me.

      • Lisa S. says:

Thanks, Linda. I’ve tried that, along with many other things over the past 35 years. It’s so frustrating.

  15. Erika says:

I am probably the only person on the face of the planet who got “high” from CBD oil. I was attending a CBD presentation by a friend, trying to be supportive. She has never seen anything like it before. And I was embarrassed, as I hadn’t meant to disway the other attendees. What could have possibly caused this reaction in me?

    • Jen Reilly, RD says:

Hi Erika! This is a new one for me, too! I wonder if it had anything to do with additives or other ingredients in the preparation? It may also be possible that you were extra sensitive to the calming effects of the CBD oil. If you decide to try it again, definitely work with a doc to make sure you get the right brand and dosage. xo! – Jen

      • Erika says:

Someone else there had also suggested it might have been me reacting to the calming effects. I do tend to be super-sensitive to drugs and chemicals, even something as simple as Ibuprofin 200. I don’t think I will be trying it again, but I am pleased to see how well it has worked for other people!

  16. stephanie says:

I started using CBD oil for back spasms and pain associated with a herniated disc after pregnancy. It has saved me! I’ve been almost pain free since I started taking it and my back spasms are gone. Very grateful:)

  17. Susie Stilwell says:

    Hi Kris,
I use Zilis ultracell ~ NO THC and it is the full spectrum effect! I actually sell it now after I had knee pain for two years after running a marathon and refused to quit running and after I used it and within 48 hours my pain was gone! I would be happy to let you try it you just keep me posted. Happy trails and I love how you are always educating us!
    Susie Stilwell

    • kris says:

That’s fabulous, Susie! I love that you found something that allows you to keep doing what you love without pain. Hugs!

    • Hey there. My father had a similar experience using CBD for the first time. He had bad arthritis pain in his knee so I started him on CBD oil. Not only did the knee pain go away, he also started sleeping better! Looking to share his experience with others. Thanks!

  18. Mariske Hekkenberg says:

    Hi Kris,

Being from The Netherlands, we have no problem at all obtaining CBD oil since it is totally legal (throughout Europe actually). I started taking it last year as part of a self-developed “program” to reset my immune system. I was experiencing major allergy problems, my meds weren’t working at all and my health was poor, including a warning that my insulin levels were in the danger zone. Besides using CBD oil I also started with acupuncture and an allergy elimination program.

Besides all the other problems ( or perhaps due to these problems ) I also had very tense nerves, resulting in a lot of cramps in my legs, neck, my jaw, everywhere. About 10 days after starting with the CBD oil, when watching TV, I suddenly realised that I wasn’t clenching my jaw (as I involuntarily always did, especially during sleep). Then a couple of weeks later I also realised the cramps in my whole body reduced by 80%.

Since then I only stopped using CBD oil for 2 weeks when I was visiting the USA. I didn’t dare risk taking it with me. After about 10 days I noticed the cramps slowly invading my system again.

Even though I didn’t lose any weight, my last blood test showed perfectly normal insulin levels. Long story short: I am very enthusiastic about CBD oil 🙂

    • kris says:

Thank you for sharing your experience, Mariske! I’m happy to hear that you’ve found a remedy that works for you. Sending you lots of love! xo

  19. Dawn Panuccio says:

I have tried CBD oil several times and two different strains both organic and clinically processed by a highly recommended distributor and each time ( 8 times) it affected my short term memory ,so much so I could not remember my dogs name! I spoke to some one who has been a long time user of the oil and he said he had heard several people say the same thing in relation to their memory recall. Sorry to say I won’t be trying it ever again.

    • Jen Reilly, RD says:

Hi Dawn! Thank you so much for sharing your experience, and I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had a negative reaction. I’m curious if it may have had anything to do with the preparation you tried? Did you experiment with different brands (totally understandable if you didn’t, just curious!)? People can have different reactions, which is why it’s a good reminder to work closely with an integrative doc. xo! – Jen

      • Dawn Panuccio says:

Hi Jen, yes I did try three different brands. I have been WFPB+ wild greens for 10 years. I find my body reacts quickly to anything that is not for my bodies highest good. As a PB nutritionalist , I was curious what my clients were experiencing. I now understand its effects on the greater body, but I have reservations of what it does to the brain/memory. I know Michael Greger MD FACLM has been pulling together peer research on both use of the plant and the oil. What I was able to access, did show in those clinical trials( peeps 25yrs and younger) that there are grave concerns for brain health/adverse development using this plant.

        • Camila says:

“Grave concerns” for memory loss if taken by younger people over a long period of time?

Just looking to clarify. Thank you Dawn, this was informative.

  20. Alicia Croft says:

One thing unmentioned, can’t you just use hemp seeds oil, hemp protein/ ground hemp seeds and still get the benefits? – although milder I’m sure but perhaps better closer to a natural state? (A whole food in the case of just ground hemp seed)
    Thanks

    • Anita says:

I have a friend who has thoroughly researched available CBD oils and HBN ( Heart and Body Naturals) and Hempworx are the top 2. These companies supply full spectrum cbd oil not isolates like the companies you have recommended. This difference is very important so it’s a pity these companies oils weren’t recommended. It will possibly lead to a not so effective product and as a result less belief in the power of this miracle oil. It is vital the whole hemp plant is used as it is the synergy of the whole plants constituents that are important. And it’s preferable that the cbd comes in a hemp oil base not a carrier oil.
Maybe worth investigating so the public is lead towards an inferior product.

      • Jen Reilly, RD says:

Hi Anita! Thank you so much for recommending HBN and Hempworx—we’ll certainly look into them! There are so many brands and preparations out there, so the ones we mentioned are the ones that my nutrition patients have seen positive results with, and ones that our integrative doc cohorts have recommended. But we are happy to add to our list! Thanks again! xo – Jen

        • Donovan says:

Hello, I am a distributor for Hempworx. I love the company and the products…and we do produce very high quality oils and creams. It is an MLM company, multi-level marketing, so if you guys are looking to add high quality CBD oil to your offerings…consider contacting me. CBD is also incredibly helpful for Cancer prevention and Alzheimers/dementia prevention. CBD was patented 30 years ago by the US Gov’ment as a neuro-protectant. Best, Donovan Giraud

    • Sue says:

Following this – I have the same question…

    • Jen Reilly, RD says:

Hi Alicia! Great question! While incredibly healthy and a rich source of protein and essential fats, hemp seeds are not a good source of CBD oil. CBD oil is extracted from the stalk, leaves and flowers of the hemp plant, not the seeds. So, if you’re looking to try CBD oil, you’ll need to try a prepared product labeled as such (after checking with your doc of course). xo! – Jen

    • Anna says:

Hemp seeds technically do have CBD oil in them but you would have to consume a ton of them to the same amount of CBD you’d get in say, 5 ml of CBD oil. Think of it like how you can get omega 3s from eating fish but a lot of people opt to take fish oil pills instead.
