7 Safe + Affordable Skin & Hair Care Brands

read all about it

Hiya Gorgeous!

The drugstore used to be my ultimate destination for all things beauty. Hair spray? Check! Blue sparkly eye shadow for 99 cents? Check! Hot pink nail polish? Check! As I strolled down those aisles as a 16-year-old girl with blond, teased hair, I cared about one thing: buying as many lotions, potions and makeup items as possible at cheap prices. (I worked hard for that babysitting money!)

Today I have other standards in mind, but I still want to be able to pick up a few things at the local drugstore. So I’ve had to do my homework to make sure the products I choose are safe for my health and kind to animals.

Luckily, there are a growing number of companies making products with non-toxic formulas.

And thanks to consumer demand for truly healthy products, drugstores, grocers and all-purpose stores like Target are beginning to stock more of these lines. Since I know you love a good deal and want to be a savvy shopper, I’ve rounded up a list of some of the safer, kinder brands you’ll find at your favorite drugstore or supermarket.

Drugstore Finds: 7 Safe and Affordable Brands for Your Skin and Hair

ACURE Organics

This skin and hair care line was founded on sustainable principles to provide high quality fair trade, natural and certified organic personal care products. Everything ACURE makes is free from animal testing (PETA and Leaping Bunny certified), parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, harmful preservatives and artificial colors. ACURE was established as a way to honor the founder’s grandmother, who battled breast cancer for over 10 years—they even raise money to provide free mammograms for at-risk women. Their products promote healthier living at an excellent price point.

Try the Lemongrass + Argan Stem Cell Everyday Clarifying Shampoo (EWG rating: 2), and Daily Nourishing Conditioner (EWG rating: 3), $9.99 each.

Dr. Bronner’s

This family-run company has been committed to making socially and environmentally responsible products since 1948! Known for their liquid castile soaps made from ethically-sourced vegan ingredients, Dr. Bronner’s uses certified organic ingredients from certified fair trade and organic farms around the world. This helps ensure fair prices, living wages and community benefits for farmers, workers and their families.

Try one of Dr. Bronner’s first and best products, the Peppermint Castile Liquid Body Soap (EWG rating: 1, Leaping Bunny Certified), $6.69.

SheaMoisture

This forward-thinking company has been testing products on its family—never on animals—for over a century (since 1912 to be exact). SheaMoisture is the legacy of Sofi Tucker, the daughter of healers from Sierra Leone and a widowed mother at age 19. At the time, Sofi made shea butter, African black soap and other natural remedies to support her family. Four generations later, SheaMoisture is run by Sofi’s grandson, and the company is known for hair and skin care products made with certified organic and natural ingredients. You can count on SheaMoisture products to be eco-friendly, cruelty-free and Fair Trade.

Try the Lavender & Wild Orchid Hand and Body Scrub (EWG rating: 2, PETA certified) for smooth summer skin, $9.99.

S.W. Basics

This all-natural, simple yet effective line of skincare was created to address the founder’s own sensitive skin. S.W. Basics believes that products should be made from scratch using only whole, high-potency ingredients. Furthermore, they only include absolutely essential ingredients and don’t add a bunch of extra filler, so you’ll see products with short ingredient lists that include ingredient names you actually recognize. In fact, each product has 5 ingredients or less! S.W. Basics also supports sustainable agriculture by only buying from organic, Fair Trade or small-farm sources.

Try the ever-popular Cream (EWG rating: 0, PETA certified) and ditch your preservative-filled moisturizers, $32.

Pacifica Beauty

This vegan and cruelty-free company began as a natural fragrance line but has expanded over the years to include a full range of cosmetics, perfumes and skincare products. Pacifica Beauty focuses on formulating innovative, safe and sustainable products that have helped elevate natural beauty to the mainstream, changing perceptions about natural beauty products across the country.

Try the Ultra CC Cream Radiant Foundation (EWG rating: 1, PETA certified) for a moisturizer with benefits like SPF, $18.

Mineral Fusion

Based in Denver, Colorado, Mineral Fusion offers a wide range of nail polish, body lotions and hair and skin care products. Everything is formulated to deliver the beneficial power of minerals, and all Mineral Fusion products are made in the USA. Many of them are still handmade. The company uses effective natural ingredients, forgoing gluten, parabens, talc, artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, sodium lauryl sulfates and phthalates. Mineral Fusion never tests on animals, and they are committed to sustainability, utilizing wind power, soy inks and packaging from recycled materials that can be recycled again.

Try the Mineral Blush in Airy (EWG rating: 2, PETA and Leaping Bunny certified) for a gorgeous summer glow, $21.99.

Eco-Tools

With a passion for beauty and the environment, Eco-Tools launched in 2008 to offer vegan, cruelty-free makeup brushes made with recycled materials and sustainable bamboo handles. Eco-Tools is well known for their incredibly soft cosmetic brushes, but they also offer a range of accessories, lashes and bath products.

Try the 5-piece brush set (PETA certified), which includes everything you need to apply your makeup like a pro, $14.49.

There ya go, 7 brands to explore the next time you hit the drugstore.

Again, these companies can be trusted to provide cleaner, health-conscious products, but beware of imitators.

Many companies claim to be “all-natural” and “organic,” but this is often marketing hype. It all boils down to the ingredient list, so be sure to read beyond the tagline and get to know what’s inside the bottle.

Check EWG’s Skindeep Database if you’re unsure of an ingredient’s safety, and remember: What goes on your beautiful skin is as important as what goes inside your glorious body.

Your turn: Do you have a safe drugstore brand you trust? Share your recommendations in the comments!

Gentle request: If you work for a beauty company please be cool, we’re trying to keep these comments as unbiased and useful as possible. Sharing your product is welcomed and awesome. Hundreds of comments about your product and/or why you’re cranky that it wasn’t included is NOT awesome. Thank you!

Peace & affordable beauty,

I love L’Occitane for their shea butter creams for body, hands and feet and no extra ingredients.

  2. Olwyn says:

Thanks for all your much needed and very welcome research Chris. If you have a list of teas that have no aluminium in them, I would be grateful! Apparently aluminium is a direct cause of Alzheimer’s…
And alum is in a lost of personal care products, tinned drinks and food, and tea…. I am distressed!

  3. That is a great tip particularly to those new to the blogosphere.
Brief but very precise info… Thanks for sharing this one.
    A must read article!

    Hi Kris,
I am using Shea Moisture’s Raw Shea Butter Body Lotion With Frankincense & Myrrh. It is definitely rejuvenating, and I feel that my skin is hydrated and a little tighter. I usually have a very dry skin, but after I started using this, my skin never felt so soft and moisturized. I do recommend this product. It has a fragrant but very mild scent. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Amanda says:

Thank you for sharing about SheaMoisture! One of my favorite companies and I am always sooo happy to support Sierra Leonean businesses. It’s a country that has so much wonderful history and natural remedies from there abound!

I love all the products Kris mentions on this blog and i appreciate that Kris is bringing awareness to consumers of brands that are healthy to use. Mountain Rose Herbs also carries great skin care products. I have used several of the brands listed here in the past and they inspired me to learn create my own brand too. like these brands do not test on animals and all my ingredients are organic.

  10. nienke says:

In Holland (Europe) we have a beautiful brand WELEDA all organic no mineral oils and lovely smell of essentatial oils like lavender. Shampoo, massage oils, deodorants, skin care called “skin food” (put nothing on your skin that you would not eat)

  11. Maddie Chase says:

Does anyone know more about the product Tate’s The Natural Miracle Conditioner? All the ingredients listed are fruits, water, herbs, flowers and vegetables, no expiration date, no describable smell. Unable to email company for more information.

  12. Jean says:

Thanks so much for this article! I have a few allergies and sensitivities (ie aloe, beeswax, etc.) that make it very hard to find good natural products. Also, I’m very fair skinned and aging. I spent hours today on the EWG website and didn’t find anything new that I wanted to try. I have already tried almost everything at Whole Foods Body. For some reason I wasn’t aware of SW Basics and this looks like an awesome solution for me. I like very few ingredients in my products (less chance of a reaction to something.) That is one reason I hate Acure. I mean do they really need 85 different ingredients for a moisturizer? What’s not in it?

Anyway, I just found an awesome cleanser for sensitive skin by Garnier. It’s the Clean gentle clarifying cleansing gel for sensitive skin. I built my own report on EWG and it’s rated a 2 with no allergies and immunotoxicities on the bar graph. It’s about 6-7$ for a large bottle that lasts. I’ve seen it at Bed Bath & Beyond and Walgreens. Please let me know if anyone is aware of a good eye cream. That is what I was trying to find today.

  13. Wyndie says:

Pure Haven Essentials is an amazing and affordable line of safe products. We spend a lot of time educating about ingredient awareness too! Love this line!

I am not in drugstores but I make all natural affordable skin care, my goal was high quality ingredients and affordable!

  15. Paris says:

I love the LOVELY LADY skin care products. Based in Colorado, I have met the owner/founder and she is a very conscious woman on a mission. Clean products that are fantastic!

  16. Ally says:

I had no idea Mineral Fusion also makes hair products until the little bottles caught my eye at Expo West! I love their powder foundations. Such great info, as always thanks for sharing!! <3

  17. kim says:

I would love to go natural in skin care but what i have tried doesn’t work and i often really don’t like the scents of these natural products and i have searched high and low for a kick ass hand lotion that has no scent and have not yet found one. Maybe you can help…

    • Jean says:

Aveeno eczema hand lotion is unscented and really nice. It’s rated pretty well by EWG. It’s not totally natural, though. I have super sensitive skin and lots of allergies and have never had a problem with their lotions. I find them to be very hydrating. I love many of the aveeno hand and body lotions and they are usually rated really well. Just be sure to get the unscented varieties and you should be in good shape. I usually get them at Safeway in San Jose, CA, but they are really easy to find in stores.

    • Stephanie says:

I can make you a lotion bar with no scent. It’s all natural and simple!

  18. Adele says:

    Hi Kris,
In the UK and I have very inflammatory rosacea.
    I use without problems:
The organic pharmacy. Toiletries , skincare and make up.
    Pai. Skin care.
    Neals Yard. Body. Toiletries.
    Dr Organics. Toiletries and skincare.
Dr Bronner for my boys hair gel/styling products.
Earth paste. Toothpaste but I have to get it from the US.
Antipodes. Their balm is awesome for everything from bumps to make up removal.
Olive oil. At a push I’ll use olive oil to remove make up if my skin becomes reactionary! 🙂
There are others but they tend to be my go too..
Hope there’s something there of use.
    Adele. X

PURE haven essentials (PHE) is not sold in drug stores but online and through home and personal sales. They are applying for their USDA organic status. They have a nice range of products, new ones coming out all the time, and you can read each ingredient on the simple labels. They also have a mission of educating the public about how to shop as an “ingredient detective” to avoid the top 20 or so toxic ingredients that are harmful to the body.

  20. leanne says:

Yes To is an affordable brand which is becoming more popular in the UK.
