My Prevention Month 2013 Mission & Line-Up!

read all about it

Hi Wellness Warriors,

It’s here! You might not have been anticipating the beginning of September as eagerly as I have, but let me tell you—this month was a long time coming. I couldn’t be more thrilled to debut KrisCarr.com’s Prevention Month 2013! Each week this month I’ll be featuring a fun new collection of accessible and easy ways to live healthier every day, including amazing information from some of the wellness world’s leading thinkers.

You may remember my Prevention Month from last year, but if not, let’s start with a little background info. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (which I totally support)—but cue the tides of pink washing over everything from cocktails to unhealthy makeup to “Buckets for the Cure;” remember that debacle? Pretty sure my cure doesn’t come from Kentucky Fried Chicken! Even handguns. Yes, you read that correctly.

There are so many issues around the pinking—

Many pink ribbon products are loaded with chemicals linked to cancer; companies not disclosing how much of the money actually goes to research or charities; and on and on. As the brilliant Stacy Malkan, co-founder of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, put it, “[These companies] want us to ‘hope for the cure’ rather than having a serious discussion about how to prevent cancer—because prevention requires changes to the status quo.”

Now, I’m not saying that we don’t need research, awareness and advances in medicine. We absolutely do! But what I am saying is that we also need to focus on NOT getting sick in the first place, and I’m not just referring to cancer, this is about all preventable chronic shit pickles. If, like me, you’re already facing a health challenge, prevention can mean becoming an active participant in your healing. Awareness of the problem is always a good thing to have, but what about awareness of how to avoid the problem from the get-go?

Yes, there are things that are out of our control when it comes to health. But that doesn’t make us powerless bystanders.

Taking the reins of our well-being is one of the most important choices we make on a daily basis. Prevention doesn’t just mean avoiding your germy co-workers when the seasonal flu goes around or standing five feet away from the microwave. Prevention means delving into each aspect of our lives and examining where we can make better choices (emotionally, physically, even spiritually). It’s putting ourselves—and our health—first. It means living like the special, supercharged, informed and passionate people we really are.

To me, prevention is more like an exhilarating party than a boring or fear-based way of living. And for many of us, prevention is also a shift in thinking. We move from feeling incapable, unlucky or unworthy of the effort, to knowing our value and believing that we can absolutely make a difference in our lives and the world around us. Now that’s some serious soul growth! This shift helped me to fall in love (with myself) and with discovering new ways to keep my little being happy and humming, and then sharing them with all of you! That’s why I’ve lined up a month of top-notch goodies that are going to rock your world, plus one extremely special giveaway.

I’ve also teamed up with the brilliant minds over at the Environmental Working Group to examine all the various ways we can take good care of ourselves from the inside out. Want some good news? Protecting our holy, hot bodies totally benefits the world around us, and vice versa. By taking care of yourself, you’re inadvertently bettering the planet. Big time score. Without further ado, here’s a peek at the fun that’s coming along this month.

My Prevention Month Line-Up

10 Ultimate Prevention Tips

We’re kicking off with a bang, friends! I’ll be asking some game-changing doctors, nutritionists and other amazing experts about their all-time top prevention tips. These are the people whom millions turn to for advice, and I’ll corral them right here to share their powerful prevention practices that you can easily start to implement over the course of the month.

The Crazy Sexy Guide to Organic Foods

Something that I hear time and time again from readers is that eating organic produce is prohibitively expensive. It’s so important that a healthy lifestyle is accessible to everyone if we want to see widespread improvement in our health. This week, we’re going to take a good hard look at why organics can be pricier, how to make them fit into your budget, and how we as consumers can shift the governmental policies that dictate what we buy at the market. Whew! Are you ready for a serving of education and action? Let’s do it!

Healthy Living Checklist

What’s lurking in your kitchen? Are there monsters in your medicine cabinet? A boogey-man in your bathtub? Together with EWG, we’ll go through your home using a downloadable PDF and make sure that you’re surrounded by healthy choices. Some of the results might surprise you, and that’s ok. We’ll look at where you might be able to make better choices on your next shopping trip. These small changes can yield big results.

Self-Care Planner

It’s great to think about wellness, talk about health, read about self-care, yadda yadda yadda. But what about actually making time for it? When you’re busy, taking care of yourself often gets shoved to the tail end of your priorities list. Outside stressors from work, family, hobbies and even your beloved pup (who ate the trash, again) can all knock your well-being from its rightful place—the top of your to-do’s! With this easy planning guide, delivered in a handy, downloadable PDF, I’ll show you how I fit self-care into my nutso schedule, and how you can, too.

I really can’t wait to dig in to prevention with you. It’s something near and dear to my heart and health, and sharing it with you is a privilege.

There you have it: my prevention mission. Let’s do this together. Start with yourself by looking at what you’d like to work on this month. Then, think of one special someone you want to share Crazy Sexy Prevention with. Maybe it’s your sister or your neighbor down the hall. Maybe your daughter is going through a rough spot and could use a little extra oomph.

Your turn: Pledge to rock prevention this month with me, by commenting below with your Prevention Month goal and/or your prevention buddy!

Peace & red hot prevention,

Love your whole bag Kris! You great!
Prevention month pledge: no more procrastinating – I have everything in place for routine exercise, eating and juicing. I will not put off doing what I’ve worked so hard to put into place so I CAN be healthy. Not to mention, 1 year old asks for “green juice” already… Just think of the positive influence I could have on my entire family if I just consistently put health above temporary tasks….

  2. Celeste Blake says:

My prevention month 6 week goal is to go green and raw almost 100%. Meaning for breakfast lunch and dinner I will be consuming over 2 pounds of raw green veggies per day. I bought a book called Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman and it has really inspired me to step up and take control of my health. Today I had 8 oz spinach blended in fresh pulp free watermelon juice, a mango with some lime, 1 kiwi, some raspberries and for dinner I made raw zucchini pasta with some lightly heated homemade veggie sauce! I really want to stick to this for at least 6 weeks and eventually go 100% RAW! Thank you Kris for all that you do.

  3. Leith Bailey says:

Hi Kris…having recovered from breast cancer just last year, have noticed my old way of being has crept in again. Started the moves to wellness again with a visit to a naturopath…yep I have some issues, however am committing to a return to green juicing, removing sugar and all plastics…

I too have been motivated by your story and welcomed your emails all through becoming well…

Thank you for what you do….love leith

  4. Reina Valdes says:

first & foremost, thank you. finding & reading crazy sexy cancer tips brought strength knowledge inspiration and hope.

my friend veronica & I will be working together to eat healthier & exercise more. improving our bodies & confidence and to reduce stress

  5. liz says:

I want to be more scientific about the way I eat. Meaning, I believe health is a science, but for some reason we equate food with emotions, celebrations etc. we want to eat what we feel like when we feel like. I’m not quite sure why our attitude to food is so permissive. As a lady who lost 160 pounds once wrote. We can be arrested for driving, after drinking a bottle of wine, but we won’t be arrested for eating a whole cake, when eating the wrong foods, can also impair our judgement and cause trouble n many areas. It affects not only our physical bodies, but also our work, relationships!

  6. Jill says:

I commit to following a plan for healthy living that is sustainable and enjoyable. No more crazy deadlines for losing weight or major restrictions on eating. Never worked, never will. Slow and steady wins the race. 🙂

  7. Sarah Del Signore says:

1/3 of the way through radiation treatment & about 50% of the way to an organic kitchen:-) Who says old dogs cant learn new tricks!?!
    Thanks for your inspiration Kris!!!

  8. Nina says:

I will refocus on healthy living and there is no better way to do that than to teach others. So I will run a fun workshop on all the things we can do to stay well. By sharing with others it reinforces my own beliefs on what I need to do.

  9. Cheryl says:

Thanks Kris! This is amazing and so important!

Last year, I did your 21 day cleanse for the first time in September.

This year, I’m doing it again (started on Monday) – it’s time for a re-set.

Prevention is hot! And, it’s helpful to have this month as a starting point and reminder on my wellness journey.

Giant KUDOS for all that you do! You keep me inspired.

  10. Alicia says:

After seeing my grandma endure her second total mastectomy I have to agree with your article! I think prevention is just as if not more important than finding a cure. It HAS to begin with us doing all we can to prevent and ensure the healthiest life we can for ourselves and our kids. Thank you for your inspiration and dedication to helping us follow the same path.

  11. Stacey King says:

    Hello Kris!
This month is my birthday month (the 10th), and this month I pledge to start my battle to prevent what doctors say is inevitable with my genes and family history. My family is littered with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and canSer. As a matter of fact we lost my father to lung canSer in June this year. My prevention buddy, my husband, also named Kris, and I plan on changing life to prevent a future where the doctors could be right in thinking that it is inevitable for me to get one of those diseases because of my family history and genes. I will prevent those problems from stalking my children by stopping them with my generation! We are starting our 21 day adventure cleanse this next week in honor of my birthday. My mantra for September is: Prevention is power! I have the power to be healthy!

  12. Roxy Coward says:

Thank you for being such an inspiration to me to live a healthier life. I especially enjoy a lot of the recipies you post on Facebook. I pledge to continue learning about and implementing healthy living strategies into my life.

  13. Megan Low says:

I am a Naturopath and i’m all about healthy living and prevention but sometimes i’m so busy helping others and running my busy clinic, that i put my own health & wellbeing on the backburner. My pledge is to practice what i preach on a more regular basis. Yes i eat well and i try to keep my life as chemically free as possible (however there is always room for improvement!) but i will make more time for exercise and relaxation and to fall in love with food all over again.
I would like to share this pledge with my mum as she is a breast cancer survivor and an amazing woman and i couldn’t think of a better person to share this with.
Kris, you are a wonderfully motivational and vibrant person which i admire and i thank you for inviting myself and others to share in your amazing journey. Sending you big hugs all the way from Australia, Megan xo

  14. Lisa says:

My prevention pledge is to eat out less, cook more, make healthier food choices, and reduce or eliminate dairy products. I keep trying to do this, and I will use Prevention Month as motivation to follow through on it.

  15. Jamie says:

My goal is to make a daily self care routine and stick with it. ( Now how do i get that PDF) Thank you Kris you are such a bright light!!

  16. Kat says:

    Hi Kris,
I know how much you love animals, especially rescue dogs. Can you help in any way to help me with my new rescue dogs?
    Kat

  17. Katie says:

Thank you Kris for just being totally fabulous! I love Crazy Sexy Diet and Kitchen! I do quite well with nutrition and wellness. I just recently became a yoga instructor to share my love of yoga. However, I have one addiction that I haven’t been able to kick and it’s a biggie. DIET COKE… I know how poisonous it is for my body but I haven’t been able to kick it yet! I’m vegetarian, eat alkalining food, drink green juice every morning, meditate and do yoga everyday, but still drink poison, WTF right?!? My hubby is my buddy in wellness and I pledge to him and the world that “I, Katie Miller, will quit Diet Coke by 9/28 (our 11th anniversary)”!! I can’t think of a better gift to give myself and my hubby for our anniversary!

  18. Michele says:

Yea!! Prevention!!! I can’t wait to read every word! As a two-time cancer survivor, the second being a major wake up call, I have been reading everything I can get my hands on and making loads of changes. I will continue to make those changes, working to get better at planning and preparing meals. Right now, it’s taking me a lot of time (well worth it tho!). I also need to get moving more!

  19. Laurie says:

I’d like to move more this month with my husband.

  20. Kristin Vasey says:

For the past four years, I have been bogged down with serious health problems. Prior to this I was a healthy, energetic and full of pazzaz 30 year old. I was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis, POTS and Lyme Disease. In the beginning I wanted to take a holistic/natural approach and my husband was somewhat against it. Finally, this year I have begun that venture and boy what a difference. I watched your documentary years ago and every time I thought I would not get healthy again, something told me to watch it again (or buy your book). I finally id and I thank you for the recharge.

Since giving up dairy, I didn’t know if I felt a difference so I tried some. Boy was that a bad idea! Sometimes that’s how you learn. My new pledge is to juice, juice, juice! I also pledge to begin integrating meatless meals. I look forward to this new venture and I THANK YOU for keeping me motivated and inspired!
