7 Safe + Affordable Skin & Hair Care Brands

read all about it

Hiya Gorgeous!

The drugstore used to be my ultimate destination for all things beauty. Hair spray? Check! Blue sparkly eye shadow for 99 cents? Check! Hot pink nail polish? Check! As I strolled down those aisles as a 16-year-old girl with blond, teased hair, I cared about one thing: buying as many lotions, potions and makeup items as possible at cheap prices. (I worked hard for that babysitting money!)

Today I have other standards in mind, but I still want to be able to pick up a few things at the local drugstore. So I’ve had to do my homework to make sure the products I choose are safe for my health and kind to animals.

Luckily, there are a growing number of companies making products with non-toxic formulas.

And thanks to consumer demand for truly healthy products, drugstores, grocers and all-purpose stores like Target are beginning to stock more of these lines. Since I know you love a good deal and want to be a savvy shopper, I’ve rounded up a list of some of the safer, kinder brands you’ll find at your favorite drugstore or supermarket.

Drugstore Finds: 7 Safe and Affordable Brands for Your Skin and Hair

ACURE Organics

This skin and hair care line was founded on sustainable principles to provide high quality fair trade, natural and certified organic personal care products. Everything ACURE makes is free from animal testing (PETA and Leaping Bunny certified), parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, harmful preservatives and artificial colors. ACURE was established as a way to honor the founder’s grandmother, who battled breast cancer for over 10 years—they even raise money to provide free mammograms for at-risk women. Their products promote healthier living at an excellent price point.

Try the Lemongrass + Argan Stem Cell Everyday Clarifying Shampoo (EWG rating: 2), and Daily Nourishing Conditioner (EWG rating: 3), $9.99 each.

Dr. Bronner’s

This family-run company has been committed to making socially and environmentally responsible products since 1948! Known for their liquid castile soaps made from ethically-sourced vegan ingredients, Dr. Bronner’s uses certified organic ingredients from certified fair trade and organic farms around the world. This helps ensure fair prices, living wages and community benefits for farmers, workers and their families.

Try one of Dr. Bronner’s first and best products, the Peppermint Castile Liquid Body Soap (EWG rating: 1, Leaping Bunny Certified), $6.69.

SheaMoisture

This forward-thinking company has been testing products on its family—never on animals—for over a century (since 1912 to be exact). SheaMoisture is the legacy of Sofi Tucker, the daughter of healers from Sierra Leone and a widowed mother at age 19. At the time, Sofi made shea butter, African black soap and other natural remedies to support her family. Four generations later, SheaMoisture is run by Sofi’s grandson, and the company is known for hair and skin care products made with certified organic and natural ingredients. You can count on SheaMoisture products to be eco-friendly, cruelty-free and Fair Trade.

Try the Lavender & Wild Orchid Hand and Body Scrub (EWG rating: 2, PETA certified) for smooth summer skin, $9.99.

S.W. Basics

This all-natural, simple yet effective line of skincare was created to address the founder’s own sensitive skin. S.W. Basics believes that products should be made from scratch using only whole, high-potency ingredients. Furthermore, they only include absolutely essential ingredients and don’t add a bunch of extra filler, so you’ll see products with short ingredient lists that include ingredient names you actually recognize. In fact, each product has 5 ingredients or less! S.W. Basics also supports sustainable agriculture by only buying from organic, Fair Trade or small-farm sources.

Try the ever-popular Cream (EWG rating: 0, PETA certified) and ditch your preservative-filled moisturizers, $32.

Pacifica Beauty

This vegan and cruelty-free company began as a natural fragrance line but has expanded over the years to include a full range of cosmetics, perfumes and skincare products. Pacifica Beauty focuses on formulating innovative, safe and sustainable products that have helped elevate natural beauty to the mainstream, changing perceptions about natural beauty products across the country.

Try the Ultra CC Cream Radiant Foundation (EWG rating: 1, PETA certified) for a moisturizer with benefits like SPF, $18.

Mineral Fusion

Based in Denver, Colorado, Mineral Fusion offers a wide range of nail polish, body lotions and hair and skin care products. Everything is formulated to deliver the beneficial power of minerals, and all Mineral Fusion products are made in the USA. Many of them are still handmade. The company uses effective natural ingredients, forgoing gluten, parabens, talc, artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, sodium lauryl sulfates and phthalates. Mineral Fusion never tests on animals, and they are committed to sustainability, utilizing wind power, soy inks and packaging from recycled materials that can be recycled again.

Try the Mineral Blush in Airy (EWG rating: 2, PETA and Leaping Bunny certified) for a gorgeous summer glow, $21.99.

Eco-Tools

With a passion for beauty and the environment, Eco-Tools launched in 2008 to offer vegan, cruelty-free makeup brushes made with recycled materials and sustainable bamboo handles. Eco-Tools is well known for their incredibly soft cosmetic brushes, but they also offer a range of accessories, lashes and bath products.

Try the 5-piece brush set (PETA certified), which includes everything you need to apply your makeup like a pro, $14.49.

There ya go, 7 brands to explore the next time you hit the drugstore.

Again, these companies can be trusted to provide cleaner, health-conscious products, but beware of imitators.

Many companies claim to be “all-natural” and “organic,” but this is often marketing hype. It all boils down to the ingredient list, so be sure to read beyond the tagline and get to know what’s inside the bottle.

Check EWG’s Skindeep Database if you’re unsure of an ingredient’s safety, and remember: What goes on your beautiful skin is as important as what goes inside your glorious body.

Your turn: Do you have a safe drugstore brand you trust? Share your recommendations in the comments!

Gentle request: If you work for a beauty company please be cool, we’re trying to keep these comments as unbiased and useful as possible. Sharing your product is welcomed and awesome. Hundreds of comments about your product and/or why you’re cranky that it wasn’t included is NOT awesome. Thank you!

Peace & affordable beauty,

Hi Kris! I know you’re already familiar with Ava Anderson Non Toxic because I’ve seen how you LOVE her mascara! 🙂 You absolutely must try her hair care! The shampoo is aloe based with zero harmful chemicals. A 16oz bottle for 15.95 that lasts me 6+ months. Amazing stuff that I know you’d love…especially the educating and empowering message she shares! Thank you for all your inspiration too! Love what you do, gorgeous! 🙂

  2. Lisa Penn says:

Are there any safe hair sprays out there?

  3. Annette Sonnenberg says:

I love the fact that these products are made by small companies and not animal tested. Thank you. I would have liked to see a picture of the bottles so it would be easier to recognize them in the stores.

    • Kris Carr says:

Really great suggestion Annette, when possible we will do that. Thanks!

    • Jean says:

you can go to their websites and check them out before going to the store. you can usually find a store locator on individual websites so you don’t waste time going from store to store. you do need to do some of your own research. I know it’s a drag, but it’s easier to spend the time at home online first and find what appeals to you. also each brand will have many different products that all look different. you shouldn’t expect to be spoonfed.

  4. Bebby says:

    Dear Kriss
    How about body shop?

  5. Chelsea says:

I have opened a shop that sells Australian Owned and Manufactured Natural Products. I have fallen in love with these products and have become so passionate about natural products.

I sell a range of products in my shop and on my website which include:

    – Tri Nature
    – Rustic Hyde
    – Puraforce

I am still trying to source some other companies so post like these are great 🙂

  6. Krissy says:

I love ALL that you do!
I was triggered by the first company who’s mom had breast cancer that donated money for mammograms. Mammograms cause cancer and are never helpful. I’m sure you know this but just had to point it out. In fact I would never purchase the products because I would never want my money going to big pharma!
Anyway thanks for listening! You are a rock star!

  7. I’ve found a great Mineral Deodorant that seems to be the best natural one that I have tried – based on Pomegranate – Paraben Free – with NO Aluminium Chlorophydrate.
    Crystal Essence. http://www.thecrystal.com.
Sold in pharmacies here in New Zealand with our local Breast Cancer pink ribbon recommendation sticker on it. Imported from USA.

Another beautiful skin care range is Sukin which also has natural Aluminium free deodorant. This is produced across the Tasman Sea by our neighbours in Australia. Sukin Australian natural skincare. Fresh fragrance, and just glides onto the skin. Love it ! http://www.sukinorganics.com

    Love your work Kris !

  9. Kathleen says:

Thank you so much for this information! I have been looking for guidance in this area for quite awhile.

  10. Charlotte says:

Thank you for helping us find more natural products in the marketplace. Unfortunately, Pacifica does not have natural fragrances. If you look closely at the ingredient list it says something like signature perfume blend with essential and natural oils. This basically means they can use synthetic fragrances and essential oils. Fragrance and perfume is a particularly grey area for companies and they can basically put whatever they want in there. This particular product, the CC cream also has mica, which has undetermined toxicity levels and is a known irritant.

  11. Alyson says:

What a great list! It’s super helpful. I’m happy to see some of my favorites made the cut 🙂 Did you not add BURT’S BEES because it’s not vegan? Just curious since I use there lipsticks thinking they are safer and better than other drug store option like say CoverGirl or something.

    • AMANDA says:

      I love Burt’s bees products!

      • Marzena says:

I do understand that there was a problem with traces of lead in their red lippy
Not sure if they corrected it

    • Laura Mcleod says:

It could be that Burt’s Bee’s wasn’t mentioned because they were purchased by Clorox. Some people care about product ownership. This is happening more and more these days. Ben & Jerry’s is owned by Unilever… and so on.

  12. Catherine says:

Dear Kris, Thank you!!! I cherish this information. You have no idea how you have helped to encourage my mother and I during our very difficult time; my younger sister was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer about twelve weeks ago. Scared and overwhelmed, I went to the library and checked out every book with the word “cancer” in the title. I found your books and I felt so inspired and blessed. Please keep doing what you are doing and know that there are many of us who you may never meet but that have been immeasurably helped by your good works 🙂 Thank you so much for the gift that you are. I am praying that my sister and the other countless people who are touched by this disease will read your story and have hope. Love and peace, Catherine

Hi there, thanks for your comment & thanks to Kris for this blog website & everything else she puts on it.
Im also in little NZ & have been diagnosed with C & it’s so hard to find something totally natural for my skin & make up! Everything I have found has 1 ingredient that’s unsafe can’t fine any pure natural. I have been using olive oil as a face moisturiser but it just isn’t enough my skin is still parched & flaking.
I will look at this link you have put here.
      Thanks

  14. Jadi says:

  15. Abigail Self says:

    Ava Anderson Non-toxic!!

  16. Dahlia says:

Hi! Great list Kris, thank you so much for it!
Could you (or anyeone!) please explain a little bit about the EWG rating system? Is a higher number better? Or a lower number? And what exactly is this based on?

    Thank you!
    Dahlia

    • Linda says:

EWG stands for Environmental Working Group. A lower number is better. The lower the number the less toxic. You can download their app and scan products at the store. you can also look them up online. They have a sunscreen guide also.

  17. Ava Anderson is a safe, healthy and affordable line of personal care products, home cleaning and cosmetics without toxic chemicals. endorsed by Healthy Child and the Environmental working Group

  18. sabrina says:

Eminence has never let me down!
