Valentine’s Day 2003… The day that I’ll never forget. While everyone else was picking out their outfits and getting ready for dates, I was in a doctor’s office getting the news that would change my life forever… I had cancer. And not just cancer, but a rare and incurable stage IV sarcoma.
I pressed my doctor to give me something, anything that I could do to help my body heal. “There are no treatment options, so we’ll just have to watch and wait,” he said. How the heck was I supposed to do that?
Since my particular type of cancer could be slow-moving, but could also become aggressive out of nowhere, we wouldn’t pursue any treatment options at first. Instead, he wanted to stand by and track it—let cancer make the first move.
But there was just one problem… I didn’t want to let cancer make the first move. There had to be an alternative to the “watch and wait” approach—one where I could be a major player in my healing journey.
I started thinking of myself as the leader of a small business—the CEO of Save My Ass Technologies, Inc., if you will. I interviewed conventional oncologists, integrative practitioners and other prospective treatment partners like job applicants—determined to assemble the best team I could to support my health.
I also read every book I could get my hands on; traveled to events, conferences and treatment centers; and learned from some of the leading minds in the fields of cancer and epigenetics. I was determined to be an informed and empowered advocate for my own care.
