A keto diet has gained quite a bit of popularity lately as an effective diet for rapid weight loss (source). But, it’s important to understand that while it may be OK for the short-term, it’s long-term safety hasn’t been confirmed, and health researchers are concerned about the high saturated fat content as well as the limited number of nutritious veggies and whole grains for heart health over the long-term (Mayo Clinic and Harvard Health). The high protein nature of a keto diet may also increase risk for kidney stones, osteoporosis and gout (source). People on keto diets have also reported brain fog, irritability, constipation, hunger, and fatigue (source).
The ketogenic diet was originally discovered as a way to treat epilepsy in children in the 1920’s. It is devoid of carbs and high in fat (basically meat, nuts, seeds and veggies). It is not recommended for weight loss or long-term health, and is especially risky for people with diabetes or a family history of heart disease. The vegan CSY diet is the opposite… lots of healthy carbs from whole grains, legumes and fruit, and it is recommended for both weight loss and long-term health. Also, a vegan diet is far more sustainable than a ketogenic diet as we’ve seen in CSY in people who decided to abandon their keto diet for our plant-based plan. Contrary to popular assumption, people actually have an easier time sticking with beans and whole grains than with a meat-heavy diet devoid of carbs.
Because most people are not used to eating beans every day, we’ve been careful to spread them out throughout the program. We help you ease into adding them to your diet slowly and recommend digestive enzymes and probiotics right from the start to help aid digestion. If you don’t enjoy or can’t tolerate beans at all, however, you can substitute with tofu, tempeh, hemp seeds, or other seeds or nuts in those few recipes that include them.
