My Prevention Month 2013 Mission & Line-Up!

Hi Wellness Warriors,

It’s here! You might not have been anticipating the beginning of September as eagerly as I have, but let me tell you—this month was a long time coming. I couldn’t be more thrilled to debut KrisCarr.com’s Prevention Month 2013! Each week this month I’ll be featuring a fun new collection of accessible and easy ways to live healthier every day, including amazing information from some of the wellness world’s leading thinkers.

You may remember my Prevention Month from last year, but if not, let’s start with a little background info. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (which I totally support)—but cue the tides of pink washing over everything from cocktails to unhealthy makeup to “Buckets for the Cure;” remember that debacle? Pretty sure my cure doesn’t come from Kentucky Fried Chicken! Even handguns. Yes, you read that correctly.

There are so many issues around the pinking—

Many pink ribbon products are loaded with chemicals linked to cancer; companies not disclosing how much of the money actually goes to research or charities; and on and on. As the brilliant Stacy Malkan, co-founder of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, put it, “[These companies] want us to ‘hope for the cure’ rather than having a serious discussion about how to prevent cancer—because prevention requires changes to the status quo.”

Now, I’m not saying that we don’t need research, awareness and advances in medicine. We absolutely do! But what I am saying is that we also need to focus on NOT getting sick in the first place, and I’m not just referring to cancer, this is about all preventable chronic shit pickles. If, like me, you’re already facing a health challenge, prevention can mean becoming an active participant in your healing. Awareness of the problem is always a good thing to have, but what about awareness of how to avoid the problem from the get-go?

Yes, there are things that are out of our control when it comes to health. But that doesn’t make us powerless bystanders.

Taking the reins of our well-being is one of the most important choices we make on a daily basis. Prevention doesn’t just mean avoiding your germy co-workers when the seasonal flu goes around or standing five feet away from the microwave. Prevention means delving into each aspect of our lives and examining where we can make better choices (emotionally, physically, even spiritually). It’s putting ourselves—and our health—first. It means living like the special, supercharged, informed and passionate people we really are.

To me, prevention is more like an exhilarating party than a boring or fear-based way of living. And for many of us, prevention is also a shift in thinking. We move from feeling incapable, unlucky or unworthy of the effort, to knowing our value and believing that we can absolutely make a difference in our lives and the world around us. Now that’s some serious soul growth! This shift helped me to fall in love (with myself) and with discovering new ways to keep my little being happy and humming, and then sharing them with all of you! That’s why I’ve lined up a month of top-notch goodies that are going to rock your world, plus one extremely special giveaway.

I’ve also teamed up with the brilliant minds over at the Environmental Working Group to examine all the various ways we can take good care of ourselves from the inside out. Want some good news? Protecting our holy, hot bodies totally benefits the world around us, and vice versa. By taking care of yourself, you’re inadvertently bettering the planet. Big time score. Without further ado, here’s a peek at the fun that’s coming along this month.

My Prevention Month Line-Up

10 Ultimate Prevention Tips

We’re kicking off with a bang, friends! I’ll be asking some game-changing doctors, nutritionists and other amazing experts about their all-time top prevention tips. These are the people whom millions turn to for advice, and I’ll corral them right here to share their powerful prevention practices that you can easily start to implement over the course of the month.

The Crazy Sexy Guide to Organic Foods

Something that I hear time and time again from readers is that eating organic produce is prohibitively expensive. It’s so important that a healthy lifestyle is accessible to everyone if we want to see widespread improvement in our health. This week, we’re going to take a good hard look at why organics can be pricier, how to make them fit into your budget, and how we as consumers can shift the governmental policies that dictate what we buy at the market. Whew! Are you ready for a serving of education and action? Let’s do it!

Healthy Living Checklist

What’s lurking in your kitchen? Are there monsters in your medicine cabinet? A boogey-man in your bathtub? Together with EWG, we’ll go through your home using a downloadable PDF and make sure that you’re surrounded by healthy choices. Some of the results might surprise you, and that’s ok. We’ll look at where you might be able to make better choices on your next shopping trip. These small changes can yield big results.

Self-Care Planner

It’s great to think about wellness, talk about health, read about self-care, yadda yadda yadda. But what about actually making time for it? When you’re busy, taking care of yourself often gets shoved to the tail end of your priorities list. Outside stressors from work, family, hobbies and even your beloved pup (who ate the trash, again) can all knock your well-being from its rightful place—the top of your to-do’s! With this easy planning guide, delivered in a handy, downloadable PDF, I’ll show you how I fit self-care into my nutso schedule, and how you can, too.

I really can’t wait to dig in to prevention with you. It’s something near and dear to my heart and health, and sharing it with you is a privilege.

There you have it: my prevention mission. Let’s do this together. Start with yourself by looking at what you’d like to work on this month. Then, think of one special someone you want to share Crazy Sexy Prevention with. Maybe it’s your sister or your neighbor down the hall. Maybe your daughter is going through a rough spot and could use a little extra oomph.

Your turn: Pledge to rock prevention this month with me, by commenting below with your Prevention Month goal and/or your prevention buddy!

Peace & red hot prevention,

I agree with you when you say that we need to focus on preventing diseases and that this must require a change in the status quo. Leaders like you are bringing Prevention to the forefront and allowing it to become as strong a message as research and treatments. Thanks!

  2. Nora Shebaro says:

    Rock prevention!

  3. Anne says:

I plan to share prevention tips this month on my health and nutrition facebook page.

    I am a new member.
you recommend gluten free, but the Chet’s recipe for
amaretto French toast has either baguette or whole grain raisin bread. this is inconsistent with your philosophy.
I have acid reflux ,GERD. Any recipes suitable w/o
garlic, peppers, radishes. Raw veggies are not easily digested and juices are sugary. Any recommendations?
I am a healthy food conscious senior; I have decades of

I do not take drugs for this condition.

  5. Kathryn Gibson says:

I pledge to make time for my mental wellness andttake control of my heart by sowing the best nourishment for my health and growth

  6. Debra Tohlman says:

Hi, I agree with your take on breast cancer month campaigns. I also freak out on the Alex’s lemonade stand and the ingredients in the lemonade. My Mom made a comment years ago that “We need to find a cure for Cancer.” My return comment “We need to take all the crap out of our food and our environment that is a possible cause of Cancer!”

  7. Elyette says:

Keep drinking water and work out three times a week.

  8. Renee Champagne says:

Thank you for thinking of the rest of us. I will use the thought of your caring to be diligent with my exercise program, and although good with eating, I will improve.

  9. Vasu Murti says:

Colleen Patrick-Goudreau founded Compassionate Cooks and taught vegan cooking classes with other vegans at the First Unitarian Church in Oakland, CA, for a number of years.

Colleen Patrick-Goudreau has authored several vegan cookbooks, beginning in 2007, with The Joy of Vegan Baking, and with the book-signing event for her first cookbook held at the First Unitarian Church.

My friend Ron Scheinberg whom I know through the San Francisco Vegetarian Society and who moved to Portland, Oregon a few years ago, where there is a thriving vegan scene tells me Colleen has a loyal fan base (including himself!) listening to her podcasts.

Portland isn’t dull, it just seems that way because it’s close to heavenly Vancouver, WA. But it looks like you’re following in Colleen’s footsteps! I wish you success with many crazy, sexy vegan fans of your own!

  10. Teri says:

    Awesome!

  11. TamTamsAnonymous says:

Just started down the 70/30 raw path last month. My bff had cancer last year and has a year head start. My other bff passed away this August. I’m changing my lifestyle and having fun with my cancer surviving bff. Right now we’re trying to figure out the mysteries of dehydrating veggies and fruits. We do juice everyday and since we live a block apart, are always supporting one another and making each other good food. It’s a life decision I am ashamed I hadn’t made sooner.

  12. Danielle says:

    Hi,
I’m looking for the Self-Care PDF guide you mentioned, where can I find this?
    Thank you!

  13. Karen says:

Sickness is waaay more expensive than organic food! You eat less, shop less, are more satisfied & lose weight to boot! I think that it’s just an excuse to say organic is more expensive. It’s hard to change a habit BUT, this one is well worth the effort!
Organic lettuce, spinach or kale are just $3.99 & I get 6 large bowls of salad for lunch or 8 green drinks.

  14. Bridget Robertson says:

I too am living through cancer. I have been on a raw vegan life and it is helping.

  15. Bridget Robertson says:

I too, am living thru cancer. I have chosen a raw vegan lifestyle. They have great food, fun and a love of nature. I really enjoy your writing!

  17. Phyllis Campion says:

Everything sounds wonderful, will look forward to all the installments.

  18. Marilene Hunzeker says:

My prevention goal is to eat more organic foods this month. I am also going to exercise 6 times a week (at least 3x outside, to get some vitamin D), and try to learn how to laugh more and stress less.

  19. Nancy says:

I look forward to this month to hear more news and information and learn to put it to use. My whole family has cancer . My dad has prostate cancer gone awry and is now in his liver. My sister has a bone cancer.. My brother is in remission from testicle cancer and my mom has been free of breast cancer for 7 years now. It is frightening to have all that in my family, scary for them and also for me on many levels. I am 58 years old and hope it is not to late for me to change my ways before I too am diagnosed .
Thank you for all you do, you are amazing.’
    warmly, Nancy

  20. Jo Ann Stewart says:

  21. Dawn says:

I pledge to go vegetarian starting right now. Because I can. Because it’s healthful and helpful for my self and all living beings on the planet and to help cool global warming.

    • Marilene Hunzeker says:

Dawn, I became a vegetarian at the beginning of the year and it has truly been a blessing in my life 🙂 I am trying to live a more peaceful and resposinble life. You will love this new journey in your life and learn a lot as well. I have eaten a wider variety of fruits, grain and vegetables this year than I have ever before. Congrats on your decision and may the Lord bless you and our dear planet 🙂 XOXO

  22. Faina says:

    Hello Kris,
Thank you for your huge contribution to people’,s health.
My friends call me a ” health nut” but my health needs a lot of improvement.
I hope to learn from you and get motivated to implement your suggestions.
I will be looking for my prevention buddy.
    Good luck with your campaign!

  23. Joan Reishus says:

Going green is not only healthy for the environment and your health. Have you thought about the chemicals that you put on your skin, hair and body. Most of our makeups, hair products and body lotions and creams are full of chemicals, so be kind to yourself by using natural products without all the added chemicals. Using products made from natural ingredients will not only help your skin feel and look younger and healthier, but will keep dangerous chemicals from seeping through the pores in your skin which could lead to harmful results. Check out the great green products on NaturallyBeautiful.me and be kind to yourself.

  24. Ellen Sinclair says:

Kris…you rock!! I am 5 1/2 years post breast cancer diagnosis. I began researching about nutrition and healing shortly after my diagnosis. I purchased a couple of your books…along with many other books. I educated myself about the disease itself as well as ways to “create wellness”. I have gained much knowledge over these last few years. I am a Breast Health Navigator. I speak with many women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. I offer them hope and encouragement by sharing my knowledge about nutrition and healing. I have found these women to be “hungry” for this knowledge. I am dedicating my life to helping these women as well as others who are afflicted with cancer and other chronic diseases by continuing to teach them about the importance of healthy lifestyles and good choices about what they are “fueling” their bodies with on a daily basis. I encourage them to “pay it forward” so we can help get the word out on how important it is to take an active role in our health. We can’t simply rely on doctors to “cure” our diseases. We MUST take action ourselves!! It’s called accountability! My mission is to stay as informed and educated as I can so I can continue to share my knowledge with others. I also believe PREVENTION is more important than early detection. I make it my mission to follow my own advice. God bless you for all you do Kris.

  25. Becky R says:

Thank you Kris! I first saw you on Hungry for Change and appreciate all that you do. My goal is to continue to make small changes in my life and my children’s life to ensure we remove the toxins and chemicals in our food by focusing on organic and non-GMO products. I also pledge to work on lowering my stress through meditation and exercise. We’ve already removed a lot of chemicals from our home (cleaning products, hand soap, etc.), but am still working on make-up. Small steps – I can do it!

  26. Maria Foti says:

Love your passion to get this message out Kris. I pledge to make this prevention message my focus in my home & community by supporting the local businesses that dedicate their time to educating others! Taking time to practice yoga daily, thanks for the inspiration ~Peace

  27. Elizabeth C. says:

Prevention is THE way to go!

  28. My pledge of prevention starts with educating people about the chemicals and toxins under the kitchen and bathroom sink, medicine cabinet and the poisons stored in garages.

Thanks, Kris, for spreading awareness and inspiration!

  29. Thanks Kris for being my cancer Mentor! I am a cancer survivor and a health and wellness coach.
My prevention goal is to create a prevention plan for people to access from my website for free in the month of October! Thanks for the wonderful creative idea!
I am looking forward to starting my yoga teacher training on Friday, this is the start of my beginning 🙂

  30. I’m IN! I *LOVE* this ….. I commit to more love and self care. Exercise in ways that feel great (dance, trail riding, walking, maybe running, and I LOVE my yoga!) Better nutrition. I’ve got the chem free down with my Pangea Organics skin care 🙂 As an 8 year long term survivor of a high stage of breast cancer, I’M IN!!

  31. Camille says:

Hi, Kris! My prevention month goal is to continue eating organic vegan well rounded diet, juicing daily at least once with various juices and exercising at least 3 times per week along with doing yoga (separate from exercise). Keeping a positive attitude and making a decision to remain in peace and love, love for myself, is also a part of my prevention goal. I have registered for the I Can Do It Conference, and I am hoping I win to go to the one in New York City. I would be coming from Tennessee if I win!

  32. Dawna says:

My prevention goal is to make healthy choices, to stand up for me and schedule time to take care of myself by eating, meditating, and all the rest of the yummy soul-full things I can do- but to also be gentle with myself when I have a setback.

  33. Andria Hopkins says:

I pledge this prevention month to embrace my well-being and health as my primary goals. To make the shift from sickness and victimhood to health and kickarse-hood. To work on what needs healing, learning to let go of the pain and patterns that hold me back and make me sick. To grow, grow, grow in loving myself and others. I want to be a part of the shift that makes this beautiful planet a healthier, safer, better place for us all. 😉

  34. Monika says:

My Pledge to me is coming home to me, AS Me.
Scheduled beautifully prepared meals. Continue to embark on my newly embraced fresh cooking…. celebrating my life and sharing it in love with those I cherish, who love me just as much.

I have lived in fear for a while and my body has carried my through much of it. She, and all of me, now asks to give back, unite and TRUST, that it is all meant to be one, trusted, loved, gently and fully nourished, nurtured, and flourishingly LIVED <3

    LOVE to you Kris <3

  35. Irena Vieira says:

I’m onboard!!! I am looking forward to taking control of my health and taking on the challenge of making those necessary shifts in my life, which for me means: loads and loads of more (organic)veggies, more vegetarian and/or vegan inspired meals and less dairy, sugar and meat. I hereby commit too being devoted to prevention!!!

  36. Liz says:

Can’t wait to rock Prevention Month! Looking for a push to make some changes–meditate, eat more greens/grains, de-STRESS! If anyone can give that extra push, its Kris.

  37. Marla says:

Pledging a 21 day cleanse using Crazy Sexy Diet, starting tomorrow morning. My buddy is Kelly S.! We are weighing in each Wednesday and logging our weight in an excel spread sheet. I will be recording my cleanse on sheet provided in CSD.

  38. Frankie Marazzi says:

I pledge to incorporate a green drink once a week. Haven’t done it yet, want to, so this is IT!

  39. Kathi Hallet says:

Kris, I too have an amazing story. You don’t realize it but you and Robin Roberts are my heros. You give me strength to help my husband. We are fighting a prostate cancer diagnosis 7 years ago gleason 9 .Surgery and Radiation at NYU. We had the pleasure of meeting Robin Roberts. His PSA has been slowly rising, He does not want to have to do hormone therapy. That is our last option. We keep fighting everyday with diet and exercise. It is not easy. PLEASE keep up your work, I tell every-one who is newly diagnosed to get your book. It gives them HOPE and PEACE.I know it did wonders for me. Keep up the Fight!!!!!!!!!!!!

  40. Mary says:

I pledge to fall in love (with myself) and learn more and more on prevention. I’m dragging my sister on this commitment with me. I am 38 with no family history of cancer. I am having a biopsy done on my breast next week. No matter the outcome, I am calling it a blessing. I am going to get sassy and sexy now with Ms. Carr’s help and advice.

  41. Looking forward to your prevention posts!
My prevention goal is to stop worry in its tracks. When I start to worry, I will stop myself and shift thinking into a productive solution mode. I will have confidence and faith that if I do my best everything will fall into place. I have no doubt that regular stress and worry lead to health problems.

  42. Allison says:

Love your whole bag Kris! You great!
Prevention month pledge: no more procrastinating – I have everything in place for routine exercise, eating and juicing. I will not put off doing what I’ve worked so hard to put into place so I CAN be healthy. Not to mention, 1 year old asks for “green juice” already… Just think of the positive influence I could have on my entire family if I just consistently put health above temporary tasks….

  43. Celeste Blake says:

My prevention month 6 week goal is to go green and raw almost 100%. Meaning for breakfast lunch and dinner I will be consuming over 2 pounds of raw green veggies per day. I bought a book called Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman and it has really inspired me to step up and take control of my health. Today I had 8 oz spinach blended in fresh pulp free watermelon juice, a mango with some lime, 1 kiwi, some raspberries and for dinner I made raw zucchini pasta with some lightly heated homemade veggie sauce! I really want to stick to this for at least 6 weeks and eventually go 100% RAW! Thank you Kris for all that you do.

  44. Leith Bailey says:

Hi Kris…having recovered from breast cancer just last year, have noticed my old way of being has crept in again. Started the moves to wellness again with a visit to a naturopath…yep I have some issues, however am committing to a return to green juicing, removing sugar and all plastics…

I too have been motivated by your story and welcomed your emails all through becoming well…

Thank you for what you do….love leith

  45. Reina Valdes says:

first & foremost, thank you. finding & reading crazy sexy cancer tips brought strength knowledge inspiration and hope.

my friend veronica & I will be working together to eat healthier & exercise more. improving our bodies & confidence and to reduce stress

  46. liz says:

I want to be more scientific about the way I eat. Meaning, I believe health is a science, but for some reason we equate food with emotions, celebrations etc. we want to eat what we feel like when we feel like. I’m not quite sure why our attitude to food is so permissive. As a lady who lost 160 pounds once wrote. We can be arrested for driving, after drinking a bottle of wine, but we won’t be arrested for eating a whole cake, when eating the wrong foods, can also impair our judgement and cause trouble n many areas. It affects not only our physical bodies, but also our work, relationships!

  47. Jill says:

I commit to following a plan for healthy living that is sustainable and enjoyable. No more crazy deadlines for losing weight or major restrictions on eating. Never worked, never will. Slow and steady wins the race. 🙂

  48. Sarah Del Signore says:

1/3 of the way through radiation treatment & about 50% of the way to an organic kitchen:-) Who says old dogs cant learn new tricks!?!
    Thanks for your inspiration Kris!!!

  49. Nina says:

I will refocus on healthy living and there is no better way to do that than to teach others. So I will run a fun workshop on all the things we can do to stay well. By sharing with others it reinforces my own beliefs on what I need to do.

  50. Cheryl says:

Thanks Kris! This is amazing and so important!

Last year, I did your 21 day cleanse for the first time in September.

This year, I’m doing it again (started on Monday) – it’s time for a re-set.

Prevention is hot! And, it’s helpful to have this month as a starting point and reminder on my wellness journey.

Giant KUDOS for all that you do! You keep me inspired.

  51. Alicia says:

After seeing my grandma endure her second total mastectomy I have to agree with your article! I think prevention is just as if not more important than finding a cure. It HAS to begin with us doing all we can to prevent and ensure the healthiest life we can for ourselves and our kids. Thank you for your inspiration and dedication to helping us follow the same path.

  52. Stacey King says:

    Hello Kris!
This month is my birthday month (the 10th), and this month I pledge to start my battle to prevent what doctors say is inevitable with my genes and family history. My family is littered with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and canSer. As a matter of fact we lost my father to lung canSer in June this year. My prevention buddy, my husband, also named Kris, and I plan on changing life to prevent a future where the doctors could be right in thinking that it is inevitable for me to get one of those diseases because of my family history and genes. I will prevent those problems from stalking my children by stopping them with my generation! We are starting our 21 day adventure cleanse this next week in honor of my birthday. My mantra for September is: Prevention is power! I have the power to be healthy!

  53. Roxy Coward says:

Thank you for being such an inspiration to me to live a healthier life. I especially enjoy a lot of the recipies you post on Facebook. I pledge to continue learning about and implementing healthy living strategies into my life.

  54. Megan Low says:

I am a Naturopath and i’m all about healthy living and prevention but sometimes i’m so busy helping others and running my busy clinic, that i put my own health & wellbeing on the backburner. My pledge is to practice what i preach on a more regular basis. Yes i eat well and i try to keep my life as chemically free as possible (however there is always room for improvement!) but i will make more time for exercise and relaxation and to fall in love with food all over again.
I would like to share this pledge with my mum as she is a breast cancer survivor and an amazing woman and i couldn’t think of a better person to share this with.
Kris, you are a wonderfully motivational and vibrant person which i admire and i thank you for inviting myself and others to share in your amazing journey. Sending you big hugs all the way from Australia, Megan xo

  55. Lisa says:

My prevention pledge is to eat out less, cook more, make healthier food choices, and reduce or eliminate dairy products. I keep trying to do this, and I will use Prevention Month as motivation to follow through on it.

  56. Jamie says:

My goal is to make a daily self care routine and stick with it. ( Now how do i get that PDF) Thank you Kris you are such a bright light!!

  57. Kat says:

    Hi Kris,
I know how much you love animals, especially rescue dogs. Can you help in any way to help me with my new rescue dogs?
    Kat

  58. Katie says:

Thank you Kris for just being totally fabulous! I love Crazy Sexy Diet and Kitchen! I do quite well with nutrition and wellness. I just recently became a yoga instructor to share my love of yoga. However, I have one addiction that I haven’t been able to kick and it’s a biggie. DIET COKE… I know how poisonous it is for my body but I haven’t been able to kick it yet! I’m vegetarian, eat alkalining food, drink green juice every morning, meditate and do yoga everyday, but still drink poison, WTF right?!? My hubby is my buddy in wellness and I pledge to him and the world that “I, Katie Miller, will quit Diet Coke by 9/28 (our 11th anniversary)”!! I can’t think of a better gift to give myself and my hubby for our anniversary!

  59. Michele says:

Yea!! Prevention!!! I can’t wait to read every word! As a two-time cancer survivor, the second being a major wake up call, I have been reading everything I can get my hands on and making loads of changes. I will continue to make those changes, working to get better at planning and preparing meals. Right now, it’s taking me a lot of time (well worth it tho!). I also need to get moving more!

  60. Laurie says:

I’d like to move more this month with my husband.

  61. Kristin Vasey says:

For the past four years, I have been bogged down with serious health problems. Prior to this I was a healthy, energetic and full of pazzaz 30 year old. I was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis, POTS and Lyme Disease. In the beginning I wanted to take a holistic/natural approach and my husband was somewhat against it. Finally, this year I have begun that venture and boy what a difference. I watched your documentary years ago and every time I thought I would not get healthy again, something told me to watch it again (or buy your book). I finally id and I thank you for the recharge.

Since giving up dairy, I didn’t know if I felt a difference so I tried some. Boy was that a bad idea! Sometimes that’s how you learn. My new pledge is to juice, juice, juice! I also pledge to begin integrating meatless meals. I look forward to this new venture and I THANK YOU for keeping me motivated and inspired!

  62. Becky says:

I pledge to start having green smoothies again and to do yoga at least 3 times a week!

  63. Lynn says:

What is your opinion on protandim

  64. Christine says:

I still have no health insurance so prevention is all that I have. Working the best I can for the last 15 years, Thanks so much for the information.

  65. Susie Horvath says:

My whole life after my breast cancer diagnosis in 2007 has been about PREVENTION! Thank you for taking a stand on this and focusing on what is truly needed.

We could change the world with this. 🙂

  66. Mariann Primus says:

Over the last year my husband and I have made some positive changes or additions to our life such as meditating daily, and together as often as possible, buying organic when possible, and trying to decrease the processed foods. My pledge is to increase my fruit/veggie smoothies and to increase my activity this month. Im sharing this pledge with my hubby of 16 years.

  67. Kaitlyn says:

I am really excited about all this good stuff for prevention month! Can’t wait to get started!

  68. Caitlin says:

Thanks so much, Kris!! You’ve been so inspiring to me! I love reading your newsletter and your books because of all your knowledge and experience. Stay strong, Wellness Warrior!!

    My goals will be to:
    1) exercise more
    2) get more sleep

Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge! You are a true blessing.
    Caitlin

  69. Love this Prevention Month 2013! Great stuff!
First off, I am a therapist who works with people struggling with eating disorders. My prevention month mission regarding my work life is to focus on ways that young women can develop positive body image, self esteem, and decrease drive for perfectionism, people pleasing, and negative self talk. Prevention not Pathology!!!
My personal prevention mission…From 2004 – 2010, I had several heart attacks, 9 stents, and heart bypass surgery…yep. It’s been 3.5 years now of health and healing. My preventative strategy for my own health is good self care! attuning to my own natural rhythms, listening to my body regarding stress, need for sleep, movement, nutrition, time alone, time with loved ones…basically paying attention to how I contend/fight or indulge/allow myself to spend “time”.

  70. Michelle Watkins says:

someone else below mentioned preaching self care but being bad at doing it for herself. I could have just said “ditto” to that. When job & home demands get crazy self care is the first thing to go out the window. And that’s when I need it most.

  71. Tanya Hoffay says:

I have been juicing for 45 days now after watching FSND documentary and have lost 41 pounds. My goal is to regain my health through healthy eating with interesting foods.I just purchased your crazy sexy kitchen book and look forward to delving into those recipes after I am through with my juice fast.

  72. September means incorporating more bedtime baths and foot massages with my oils 🙂

Thanks for getting other people on board to take care too!! It is 100% worth every ounce of effort 🙂

  73. Crystal says:

    Rock on Kris!!!
I will be sharing your posts this month with my own precious readers on facebook. Everyone should know ‘all the options’ out there for living a full vibrant life. It is also my mission to help others not get caught up in the raging train of fear that I experienced within the cancer system. So I have a ‘cancer prevention page’ on my food blog ‘The Queen’s Table.’ I love sharing your upbeat attitude about health, along with my own thoughts about the many facets of our beingness that we need to address in order to take control of our care. The mind, body, soul connection is so very important to our overall heath. Having now experienced illness myself, I felt compelled to create my food/wellness blog to share the “personal power” we do have over our health and choices. On a positive note I have reversed and eliminated disease as well as lost 76 pounds the past two years due to my organic whole food food choices. You have been one of the inspirations in my quest. Thank you for all your efforts to be a fun voice of reason, in the chaos that is the cancer business. One day we will meet. Till then, love, glitter, and unicorns! Keep spreading the LOVE.

  74. Mary says:

I am a nurse working 12 hour shifts. I pledge to get my butt outside as often as I can during the day to find my peace and tranquility. Yeah!

  75. Marilyn Lacher says:

I just was diagnosed with 40% renal failure and have started a plant-based diet to improve my health. So far it has given me so much energy and stamina and I am so grateful to Kris for all the information she shares on her website. I am constantly looking for more and more things I can do to improve my health.

My friend also has renal failure and I am trying to encourage her to go on a plant-based diet. I think seeing Kris would definitely help her in her health efforts.

    Please pick me!! Love Marilyn

  76. Wow, wow, wow! I am so inspired by all of this. And so grateful for prevention being front and center in this conversation.

My prevention month pledge is to get serious about weight loss through healthy eating and regular exercise. It’s something I have danced around for a long time – committing and then not following through. I’m changing that, today.

  77. Stephanie says:

I love reading about what Kris has to say! I have been following her for years and have given her books to several of my friends! I have been slowly changing my lifestyle to include more yoga, more fruits and veggies (organic when possible), less meat, I even tried going vegan for a week! I am also much more aware about all the toxic chemicals that are out there and have been focused on living a healthier, less toxic life. But….(big BUT) I am really struggling with getting all the toxic crap out of my mind! So, with inspiration from Kris and other friends who enjoy the crazy sexy lifestyle, I am pledging to fill, no-overflow, my crazy mind with happy thoughts! I hope that my mind will be so full of glorious, positive, happy thoughts that it won’t have any room left for the nasty, toxic ones. I will share this pledge with my husband of fourteen years (Today that is! Yes it is our anniversary!)

    xoxo, ~Stephanie

    ~ decrease Alcohol consumption
    ~increase Exercise
    ~decrease Caffeine

Over the past 4 to 5 years I have cleaned up my diet, gone gluten free to manage anxiety and depression symptoms and now I have a predominately plant based diet. I just need a little more focus in these areas! Thank you, Kris, for your motivation!

    ~Blessings,
    Tina

  81. Val says:

Thank you Kris for bringing us such inspiring and important insights and for creating such a wonderful community. I pledge to continue my fitness and nutrition journey and experiment with newer vegetarian/vegan recipes (hopefully get my kids to eat them!). I also pledge to start a gratitude journal and write a few things I’m thankful for everyday.
I also plan to remove myself from toxic relationships at work and gain better balance in my work/life. That may be a lot to tackle but I’ll try…

  82. I love your recipes & am sharing them with my family & friends
    Thank You Kris : )

  83. Coral says:

I want to do this with my Mom. She is on Maintainance for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and I have an on going battle with an auto immune disorder, currently in a flare up. I finally made the plunge and went totally raw vegan a couple months ago to try and help my situation. My Mom wants to join me. We want a healthy home. My parents have the suite downstairs.
I spent the years my Mom was critically ill nursing her and now she has taken up helping me. Fighting with doctors for answers as we try to heal me with the old adage “let food be thy medicine.” I can only be grateful for the example she has set. I hope to prevent any relapses for her and help us both on a road to recovery.
That being said my pledge, less sickness causing stressy thoughts & More fruit & vegetables for the whole family, this may mean cooking some veggie burgers for my husband but I have to accept that everyone is at a different point on this path and be happy with how far we have come.
Thank you for how much you have taught me so far.
    I’m looking forward to September.

  84. Vibeke Egelund says:

An enormous big THANK YOU from Oslo! You inspire me so much it some times gives me goose bumps..!! 🙂
I’m on the right track already thanks to you (just beat cancer too) – but still need to pledge that I will make more time for all the good that still has to be done….
    Love x

  85. Gina says:

Learning to pace myself and take steady, small steps towards my physical and Life goals has allowed me to keep going when I would have given up before. This includes exercising more and eating more healthfully (allowing me to sustainably lose nearly 20 lbs), balancing my career with my preferred lifestyle, and mindful parenting. I’ve enjoyed reading your posts, and look forward to more! 🙂

  86. Pam says:

I pledge to only treat myself to 2 sugar treats a week to start. Hopefully this will lead me to no sugar treats at all!

  87. Voula Delis says:

Kris..thank you so much for being the wonderful warrior that you are! I am a 9 year survivor, who after just finishing chemo for a second time (wasn’t once enough?)…am super charged and inspired by you! I have been vegan (on and off) for almost two years and pledge to stay on track and juice my little heart out! I rocked chemo (round 2) with protein shakes and juicing and plan on becoming so healthy my oncologist will be left speechless. I have so much to learn from you and am so grateful to have you as my cancer college professor!! I wish you everlasting strength and health to keep sharing yourself with us. 🙂 big hugs xx

  88. Tammy says:

Thank you Kris! My husband and I ordered a new juicer last night and are committing to a cleansing fast this month to reboot and get us moving. We and our 3 year old twins have been on a vegetarian diet since June thanks to your Crazy Sexy Diet and the China Study! I look forward to all your upcoming September posts!

  89. lori mueller says:

My prevention pledge is to make time for my P.T. exercises 3 days a week. That is the one goal I’ll set for myself; there are many others that I could add to make a list, but since that feels stressful, I’ll limit to just this one.

  90. Nikki says:

This came at such a wonderful time. After a really hard year filled with nearly constant stress and loss, I totally let myself get caught on what feels like the longest roller coaster ride ever- with the dips being depression and the peaks being anxiety. I’m on day 3 of the Adventure Cleanse, which is something I love to do especially this time of year (I’m drinking Morning Glorious green juice as I write this :)) This month of prevention for me is all about self-care and kindness; two things I’ve really not given myself, especially these last 14 or so months.
Thank you, Kris, and your wellness team. Your words and the energy you put out, well it all feels pretty magical. It’s taken me a long time to accept where I am at physically, emotionally, and spiritually because of things that have happened but mainly my responses to those events. You’ve made me feel like I can be a wellness goddess at a time when I feel far from that.
    Blessings
    Nikki

  95. Jan says:

Thank you, Kris, for your tireless and steadfast inspiration!

I tend to incorporate snacks and breadstuffs with no nutritional values to satisfy my appetite. As a result, I feel more tired and carry extra pounds I don’t need. My prevention pledge is to concentrate on eating mainly nutritional foods this month, and to restrict the non-nutritional intakes!

  96. Bri says:

    Hello Kris!
I am so pleased to see everyone is doing something special for themselves this month…It was my plan all August!!
So, I pledge to put my health first…woah. I wrote it! Yes, I will do it. I will put my health before husband, kids, commitments, family, friends….YES I WILL!!! : ) : ) : )
    Thanks for the encouragement Kris.
I can’t wait to be at the end of the month, patting each other on the back while laying back enjoying all the goodness we’ve welcomed in to our lives…YAY!!
Good luck and God bless all!!

  97. Dianna Roberts says:

Recently purchased a juicer…waiting for it to arrive in the mail!!! I will be juicing from the moment that juicer arrives!!!

  98. Cynthia Neudoerffer says:

September is *Childhood Cancer* Awareness month – forget pink think gold. Cancer is one of the leading causes of childhood death in North America. I exclusively breast fed my son till six months then only fed him organic foods, avoided toxins etc yet at 10 months he was diagnosed with one of the rarest and most aggressive forms of cancer around – a primary rhabdoid tumour of the liver, stage four with mets to his lungs & lymph nodes. He died 6 months later after 6 Rounds of chemo and multiple Alternative therapies. We had an amazing journey with our son (www.hendriksjourney.blogspot.com) but no amount of prevention would have helped for his nor many childhood cancers. Yet almost NO research money goes to children’s cancers. Would so love it if you would also highlight that September is the official Month of Childhood Cancer Awareness and remind followers to support research into childhood cancer. Thanks!!!

  99. Alison Videto says:

I pledge to keep myself from putting toxins in my body, and to continue to flush out the old toxins by eating a clean, plant based diet and drinking tons of water. This is my journey to a clean[er] slate.

  100. Sam says:

so good to pause and think about this~ it’s so easy to fall off the wagon of wellness, even flying in the face of best intentions and true desire! I pledge to take more moments to BREATHE DEEPLY, after which I have the presence of mind to remember that I LOVE my green juice, and the extra 1/2 hour it takes in my morning is a gift I give myself, not something that will make me late to wherever I’m running off to next~ and also remember how much I can sink down into a peaceful place with my qi gong routine that way too often gets put off until evening, and then put off into the next day after a long work day, and so on, and so on,….. Thanks, as ever, for the inspiration, education, kick in the pants, shot in the arm, really, feeling I’m not alone in my journey for wellness and health, despite the dips along the way.

  101. Debbie says:

Looking for the motivation and dedication to find the time for me

  102. sandy larson says:

I pledge to make closer connections and relationships. Thank you. Prevention month rocks!

  103. Dora says:

Kris – I love your news letters and can’t wait for each new one to arrive. You give me inspiration in my busy, busy life.

My pledge is to really, really walk the walk. Practice what I really know what’s better for me – meditation, yoga, eating – anything to better my health (physically and mentally). I need to organize my life so I can spend more time with my family yet get things done at work and my business. I would like to do this with my sister. We both do a lot for our family, yet don’t do much for ourselves. She lives over 1,000 miles away but we are still very close. I’m looking forward to working on this during September!!

  104. Marla says:

My prevention pledge is to lose 30 pounds by my 4oth birthday by making healthy lifestyle changes, including consistent exercise. I will be accountable to 3 other ladies who are also taking a similar pledge.

  105. Debora Brown says:

    Thank you Kris,
I commit to ousting white sugar from my diet and to eating only the foods i know heal and prevent disease.

  106. Ann says:

You are so upbeat and inspiring! I look forward to any and all ideas you can offer to help me improve my health! Thank you so much for doing this.

  107. Wendie says:

My prevention plan this month is to go back to being vegetarian. I’ve been on and off the wagon several times and living where I do makes it a little tougher, but I’m really ready to go back so this month is out with the animals (except for the ones that live with me!!) and in with the awesomeness of plants!
I lost my beloved dog a month ago and maybe a little self-care is just what I need to heal my broken heart.

    • Ellen says:

I commit to stilling the body and sitting in silence and listening to my breath for a brief period daily. I also commit to sharing the healing and joy that dance offers with the children and adults I work with.

  108. Mary says:

You always inspire with your positive attitude. I’m starting to feel better after learning I need to be gluten free. I pledge to get back into exercising and being more vigilant about my food intake. Thanks Kris!

  109. Cathy Szewc says:

As I write to you I am enjoying a glass of your Green Guru smoothie and raise it to you in tribute! I pledege to incorporate more juicing and green smothies into my diet. I know my body will thank me for it. So far..meat is out of my diet…not ready to give up eggs yet. Baby steps but it’s all good. Thanks Kris for opening my eyes to a healthier way of life. And you make it FUN!

  110. Karine LeBlanc Sault says:

I just bought the Vita-Mix; yeah me! So my goal is to use it, use it, use it. I want to explore with it’s possibilities and make lots of healthy green drinks, nutritious smoothies, soups, meals and yes, even desserts that my whole family will enjoy; even our 5 year old!

My family is transitioning from a vegetarian diet to a more vegan, Crazy Sexy, GMO free diet. We’re working through some of the learning curves, adjustments and challenges which pretty well are all related to finding and making recipes that our 5 year old will eat – (without the power struggles 🙂 ).

Thank you for this. I can use all the help I can get!
    Karine

  111. Sonia Macleod says:

Hi Kris , well I just want to share, that you have changed my daughter and my life. We have become Vegan after reading your books . We started with the Crazy Sexy Diet , and had lots of laughs as we tried to incoporate it into our lives, We live on an island off the mainland in New Zealand and we both commute to the city so in the freezing cold winter mornings, we got up to meditate , wrapped in blankets on cushions on the floor, after a few moments of silence , Genevieve said , Mum , whats meditation ? We got the giggles and that was the end of the meditation .

I feel so clear and clean and dare I say it pure ( who me ?) , As I make my Green Juices I feel so happy , even though its cold and my fingers are dropping off.
For prevention month I would like to work clearing my physical space ( and get some insulation ) and my head space, spiritual practice ( get rid of mental insulation ).
    Thankyou Kris for your inspiration
    Love Sonia xx

  112. Sarah says:

Kris Carr, you are a legend. I can’t tell you how grateful I am for having discovered your blog.

This month, I’m going to focus on eating well & meditation.

    Thank you xx

  113. Danielle Fillmore says:

Yay! I’m in! My goal is to get a handle on my back pain. I’m trying acupuncture and I’m hoping to learn how to live in a way to give me a healthy back. My daughter is going to be my prevention partner. She’s in college and her goal is to learn how to have a better night’s sleep. Thanks for your encouragement ❤

  114. Cheryl says:

Prevention ROCKS!!!!! It’s how I live every moment of every day because I’m worth it. I love you and your work Kris.

  115. Renee says:

Since being diagnosed with breast cancer last year I have made many changes. I thought I was living a very healthy life style before the diagnosis, but I’m working on being even more pro-active. I’ve come to a point where I am a vegetarian….almost vegan…I will continue working on that. But my main goal for this month is to do the research and decide to quit the Tamoxifan or embrace it without doubting that it’s right for me. I am so wishy- washy with how feel about it. Thinking about the side effects it causes a lot of fear and anxiety. I think I know my answer….but I’m fearful of stopping it. It’s also my goal to do 30 days of yoga! I love yoga, it has helped me get thru so much. A daily practice can only be a positive thing!!!! Thanks Kris for all your positive words and wisdom!! Your newsletters are always something I look forward to 🙂 I will share this with my very best friend, my 25 year old daughter! xoxo

  116. april banach says:

My prevention month goal is to continue to eat and juice for not just long term health but emotional and physical short term well being as well. I am hoping to enlist my husband as my buddy. He had a motorcycle accident which broke his back. I want to help him help his body to heal

  117. Tea says:

My goals for prevention month to commit myself ten minutes a day (hopefully more!) of meditation and getting back on track with juicing daily!

  118. Kathleen says:

I am making a commitment to myself to pursue a healthier path in September in honor of Prevention Month. My specific goals are to stay committed to my new fitness and nutrition program from Turbulence Training and to focus on sticking to my budget, paying off my debt and growing my savings little by little. Finally, I am experiencing a significant amount of stress in my life right now on many fronts, and in September I hope to experiment with ways to manage my stress better so that it does not impact my health (and digestion!) so much.
Thanks for all you do, Kris. Happy Prevention Month!
    Much love,
    Kathleen

  119. Stephanie says:

I pledge to get back into exercising regularly, and I’m taking my fiancé along with me for the ride! We’re going to start doing yoga together. Something you’ve been meaning to do for a long time. Cheers to good health and love to share it with! 😀

  120. Beck says:

    Bring it on!!!!

  121. Kelly says:

Thank you for this! As a homeschooling mother of four living in Alaska, we are beginning our school year tomorrow. I was just telling myfantastic hubby that as I put together my planner for the month I was going to finally plan sometime just for moi! I deserve it! Many times I’ve started your cleanse and haven’t made it through an entire day managing to do ev erything. That’s my goal this month. Schedule in me time, cause if Mama ain’t happy (or healthy) no one is.. Thanks for the virtual kick in the bum. Just what I needed before the Alaskan darkness starts closing in on me.
Bless you Kris. You are a force.

  122. I intend to stop all white foods for 3o days.

  123. Donnaave says:

Kris, last year I did a sugar detox under the guidance of a well coach, so I do not eat any processed food, or any sugar when I need something sweet its fruit.
My goal first of all is to download you Eguide and do make more smoothies , look into juicing and try meditation.
I have just discovered you recently online and have subscribed to you newsletter, I love your enthusiasm

    Donna

  124. Kathleen says:

After coming off a breast cancer summer. It was stage zero and I’m all clear – I am so ready to reset my health goal watch and no one I’d rather do it with than Kris! Back to school time is more of a New Year than Jan 1, so the timing is just perfect. My goal is More Action/Less Planning to Act. I am about 75% there, but need to add in some daily practices that will bring better balance. A good morning routine that includes my exercise, making time for meditation. My prevention buddy is my BFF in Texas and I know she’ll be looking forward to this as much as I am!

  125. Melissa says:

I am pledging to buy ALL organic during the month of September! 🙂

  126. paul cade says:

to tweak my life style, up the exercise and work on loving myself and accepting myself as i am – love and embrace each minute of each day, without expectation

  129. Stephanie says:

Hi Chris – Love to read you! Quick question – If the I Can Do It conference in DC is on 9/28-29, how will that work if the winner isn’t announced until 9/30?

    • Elizabeth Castoria says:

      Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for catching that! We’ve updated the time frame, and will announce the winner on Monday, September 16.

      All the best,
      Elizabeth

  130. Laurie says:

I am a plant strong girl BUT I struggle with an eating disorder. My pledge is to listen to my body and not my impulses. I pledge to pray (my meditation) every Time I feel myself running down that impulse track. I pledge to be more concerned about my health and not my weight. I pledge to stop eating when my body says full. I pledge to be more conscious about chewing and savoring every bite. Slowing down and really enjoying the food I’ve prepared.
Kris your story has inspired me (and I’m a lot older than you). Thank you for sharing your journey and your success with all of us. You’re showing me that to not share would have been selfish. Share with others as we all suffer with ‘something’. Sharing is caring;)

  131. Patricia says:

Been following you since my breast cancer diagnosis in July 2011. Also dealing with thyroid cancer. Other than cancer – I am perfectly healthy. 🙂 I will be juicing and green smoothy-ing every day!!!

  132. Sheila says:

Today is the first day of my 21 day cleanse! This time I will succeed. I have echoed your wisdom to many, lent my ear marked Crazy Sexy books to many, yet something (more like someone ME) always finds a way to listen and give in to toxic crappy snacks!!!! I have made progress tho no alcohol, no caffeine, no dairy Im just crazy for crackers and chips and bread toasted with Earth Balance or Almond butter mmmmm. Today I am armed with my juices…crisper full. I am a one year survivor of breast cancer and you were my shiny little light thru it all. I kept a positive attitude largely due to you and your straight talk. I could HEAR you -you gave me HOPE & ENCOURAGEMENT and a kick in the butt when needed and yet Ive never met you. Thank you from the bottom of my scarred up chest where my big, beautiful, full heart is! xxS

  133. Lisa says:

My goal is to eat healthier so I can loose weight. Presently I’m weighing in at 200 pounds with a height of
5′ 0″. I need to get into pysical shape as I loose my excessive weight. I started gaining weight while in college and continued to put on pounds each passing year. I’m tired of looking at fat people including and especially myself. I’m critized about my weight all the time which is hurtful to me. I’m about 75 lbs. over weight.

During the month of July I took my adult neice with me to Italy. We went to Rome and Sicily to visit our relatives. I was astound at how healthy the people there were. I have a cousin who will be 90 years old on September 6th, she was quite amazing. I couldn’t believe my eyes. She looks the same as she did 21 years ago when I last visited Italy. She is tiny with a petite frame. Her hair is still beautifully thick and she walks straight with no need for a cane or walker as so many do here in America. I am convinced it is the food and water she and the others drink and eat. They also live a healthier life style. They get up at 6:00 am for work and come home at 1:30pm for the 2:00 pm dinner which is their biggest dinner of the day. They than rest till 4:00pm and return to work. At 9:00 in the evening they have their second meal which is light. Most of the food they eat is grown from their land they farm. They make their own wine and olive oil as well. They grow their own fruit from the trees on there farm. Its increditable and I’m very blown by all of it. Ever since I have returned home from Italy I have felt very angry and miss the european life terribly. It’s a shame how are food industry here in America are making us sick and in many cases killing us. I feel a real need to do something positive to change this around. So I’m going to start with myself in making those positive changes. After my July visit to Italy I’m now ready to address my weight problem and get in good physical shape. I would like you to help me do that.

  134. Andrea B. says:

    You are such a rockstar!!

I SO need this in my life righf now!! I pledge to start making my own self-care a priority this month. I have let my emotional/spiritual wellbeing fall to the wayside & it is impacting me tremendously!

Can’t wait to learn so much from you this month!!

  135. Lisa says:

I am excited to commit to 1. Drinking more water each day. 2. Drinking at least one green juice a day. 3. Taking – at a minimum – 15 minutes to sit quietly and “be.” and 4. Focusing on gratitude and giving thanks throughout the day. (Thank you, Kris, for shining your Light so brightly.)

  136. Sandra Castillo says:

Hello beautiful! I’m exited and @times overwhelmed with this leap of faith which is learning a new way of living. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and we are determined to steer ouselves into a health concious, vibrant and purpose driven lives. We owe it to ourselves, our families and the generations yet to come. People perish for lack of knowledge. Thank you for all you do. Lovingly hungry forAbundant Life, Sandra <3

  137. 🙂 I am a certified wellness advisor and massage therapist. I LOVE MY JOB!!!! My pledge is to do the same for myself as I do for others 🙂 I will stay to my plan of wellness, making sure to keep my stress levels at bay, and to get enough SLEEP!!!

  138. diane says:

i commit to greeting the day – green juice/smoothie and meditation each morning.

  139. Christine says:

Thanks, Kris, for all the inspiration to kick off September.
My goal this week is to let go of sugar and chemical sweetners. I will be having more green smoothies this week, too. Going to be “kind” to myself this week and work on not listening to the negative and focus on the positive.

  140. Cindy says:

Thanks for giving me this opportunity to be a part of Prevention Month. I had no idea or maybe never gave it any thought before about all of the Pink Sponsors just making money and not helping the cause or cure at all. I have so much to learn from you Kris! I pledge to clean up my diet and my kitchen this month. I’m sure that I have things in my kitchen that I have no idea that they are harmful to me and need to get rid of. I am going to share this with my cousin…..she has a tremendous amount of stress in her life and she can’t say “no” to anyone in her family. I’m also starting Yoga Classes again this month. I took the summer off due to vacation and other things conflicting with the Yoga Classes…..I’ve really missed them.

  141. Laura says:

I love the way you think. I have been bothered by the pink sponsors since I was diagnosed in 2009. My husband was recently honored by the American Heart Assoc. Love them too. At a recent meeting at Ouback Steak House everyone was given a coupon for a Bloomin Onion. Pass!
My pledge is to drink more green smoothies and incorporate more juicing into my daily routine.
You are an inspiration to those of us who are not always happy with the solutions of the medical field.

  142. Dawn says:

Kris, thanks for sharing your message with the world!! I’m going to start by reclaiming my health and getting back on board with a primarily plant-based diet, kicking my sugar addiction to the curb!!

  143. Kristiin says:

I pledge to care about my health and value myself. At the deepest level, this is the most important thing I can do for prevention. I pledge to experiment with 1 new juice and 1 new smoothie a week, bring more whole food vegan/vegetarian recipes back into my life, abstain from grains/high-glycemic foods 95% of the time, exercise 5-6 days a week (yoga, dance, jogging, weights), and meditate on the 7th day. I will also do affirmations/gratitude journaling every morning.

    Thanks for motivating the prevention!

  144. Jill A. Johnson says:

My prevention pledge is to keep at eating as clean & raw as I can & to get out & hike more & do yogi not twice a week but some everyday… to stay present to the moment & enjoy the life I have been given… not any around me that want to share the pledge with me but that didn’t stop me from posting this to my facebook page in hopes someone will…
Thank you Kris for being such a great inspiration for the world to get important information from, You Are Awesome!!! 🙂

  145. Shannon says:

I’m constantly preaching prevention, prevention, prevention. Be the CEO of your own body, and yet some days, I fall off the preaching wagon and don’t live by my own words.
This month I commit to living by my words.
To stay on the healthy wagon.
I’m also going to commit to getting back to my yoga practice!
And to finding balance again in my life.
Thank you Kris for this wake-up message.

  146. Tash says:

Hooray!!! I am currently working with my hormones and thyroid health so I am going to pledge eating for my health which includes loads of green juice and I have literally just cleaned out my makeup and bathroom cupboards. Good bye yucky chemicals! BLAH!

  147. Caroline Howser says:

What a wonderf gift to your followers and fellow wellness goddesses! My prevention goal for this month is to continue my effort to get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, meditate each day – even for just 15 minutes, get 8-9 hours of sleep each night (that is what I really need in order to not feel like I need multi cups of coffee), eat more greens, and do more research into affordable makeup that isn’t full of gross chemicals. I am continually inspired by you Kris and all the wonderful people who contribute to your website and also fellow followers of KrisCarr.com!

  148. Courtney says:

Thank you Kris! I would like to continue to live from my heart, soaking up the little moments, all the love, and really rocking this miraculous soul I was gifted with. My prevention buddy is my lovely friend, Rachael Youngblood. I’ll be sharing all month long! 🙂
Let’s get the party started! Viva!

  149. Alexis Meads says:

Great idea, Kris! I love that you’re doing a prevention month. Prevention, in my opinion, is the most important factor to focus on. This month I pledge to stop worrying. I’m going to only look at the good that is happening in my life and work, and let go of the worry.

    xo,
    Alexis

  150. Laura says:

This month I am combining your 21 day Crazy Sexy Adventure Cleanse from Crazy Sexy Diet, with Gabby Bernstein’s May Cause Miracles 40 day guidebook and I couldn’t be more excited. I’ve made a lot of big changes over the past few years, but my plan for this month is to take my health and happiness to a whole new level. Prevention month, you say? I say, Amen.

  151. Peg says:

Love you and all you stand for Kris. Your attitude is infectious and inspirational. I look forward to reading all your prevention advice this month!

  152. Laura Zappitelli says:

Prevention is crucial to over all health.

As a result of my cancer diagnosis and consequent bone marrow transplant i have been commited to juicing, no meat eating and overall better physical health. I have neglected my spirit and she has suffered. That being said I pledge to wrap my arms around myself and tell myself that I love me as often as I can. I am committed to loving every part of me, no matter the fear and doubt and shame I need to overcome.

Kris has taught me that living from a space of love is the catalyst to the greatest life.

    Hugs, Laura

  153. Leila says:

I’ll be working on my adrenals, and blood sugar levels this month! Thanks for asking 🙂

  154. Jennifer LaDuca says:

    Kris,

I wound up in the hospital needing a blood transfusion due to severe anemia. That was a wake up call for me to start taking care if myself.
You have inspired me to eat healthier and walk a path towards wellness.

    Thanks for that!

    Jenn
    Ahwahnee, Ca

  155. Julia Donato Dousette says:

My mother has just undergone some issues related to health that were complicated by years of neglecting exercise, or paying attention to the foods she eats – and relying on doctors and lots of pharmaceuticals. I just turned 50 and have led a much healthier life and have no dis-ease with my body. My prevention month goal is to get a colonoscopy and to do my yoga/meditation daily…oh, and to fill my noggin with lots of positivity! My Prevention Buddy is my superhero hubby!

  156. Pam Sullivan says:

Love your blog and am ready to begin on our prevention journey. Over the past three years I have slowly changed my lifestyle to be kinder and healthier. I am vegetarian and sometimes vegan and through your inspiration am a regular green smoothie drinker. I have a way to go and can’t wait for prevention months to begin.
One big goal is to reduce stress and my partner in this will be my wonderful spouse.
Thanks for caring for yourself and us.

  157. Annie says:

I will definitely share all of this wonderful wisdom and look forward to it all !

  158. mary says:

Thank you Kris for your actively, creative life-mission/party! I’m 60 days into an Anti-Inflammatory
Wellness Program & at 68 am reversing signs of aging, pain, health concerns etc. Your wonderful
“recipes” for Life as well as food have been a tremendous help in making these changes a way-of-
life (with Fun as a Bonus!)

  159. Anne says:

I pledge to start exercising again, especially burst training and to avoid the grains and sugars that weaken me. It’s time. Finally, I choose to be around inspirational, positive people who are energizing to be around. Not sure of a buddy yet but maybe my friend Melody.

  160. Karin Newman says:

I am going to drink more veggie smoothies, avoid high alkaline foods, and reduce stress through meditation, exercise, and ultra bath soaks.

  161. Jennifer says:

My prevention plan pledge starts with replacing I want, should or could with I AM.
I am eating clean, organic, plant based foods and have detoxed my body of all processed junk foods, sweating daily through exercise, creating art and volunteering. I pledge to reduce and prevent stress and illness by starting NOW, loving the process and being in total acceptance of my journey.
Let the prevention plan journaling goodness begin!

Thank you Kris for the rockin inspiration and all the good you do in this world!
    Love + blessings!
    Jen

I pledge to take better care of myself, plan my meals for my family and follow them.

  163. Kerry Hughes says:

Thank you Kris for always bringing a HUGE smile to my face!
I pledge to release my attachment to the outcome of the illness that I am on this incredible journey with. To love and trust that my body knows exactly what it needs to heal, and to know that I can surrender fear for patience and acceptance. I pledge to continue to nourish my body and give it the greatest opportunity to heal and in turn teach me peace. I am in awe everyday of the lessons that have come my way and I pledge to offer that to others that may be struggling with their journey.
I thank you for your grace and fortitude!
    With palms joined –
    Kerry

  164. BAS says:

    Good idea Kris. Thanks!

  165. My prevention goal for the month is to go back to eating the way I used to–vegetarian. My other is to try and lower my very high stress level, either through meditation or walks. Thanks so much for this great mission!

  166. Teri Knipe says:

Well said Kris! I agree totally. Prevention is the answer. I saw you on Ridgefield CT 1.5 or so and became vegetarian from that point on. Juicing regularly and loving the prevention that I believe that I am providing myself. In fact I will be taking it on the road hosting juicing workshops in people’s homes and sharing this mission that we are both on. Love you Kris Carr!

  167. Tresa says:

Now I am excited for September! Looking forward to all your great info and tips and for me it’s coming at the perfect time, when I have alot going on in my life that is stressing me out and this will be a daily reminder to take care of myself. Thank you!

  168. Brenda Marie Robles says:

Im completly glad that you decided to do “Prevention Month” . Recently I lost my aunt to Cancer. She try to incorporate natural healing but it was to late.
I’ve been reading abaut healty eating but It is kind of confusing sometimes.
I want to eat better, feel better but I need guidance..
Right now I have fibroids. I want to do everything that I can possible do to eliminate them.
I live in Puerto Rico and is hard to eat healty because of the high prices and the lack of organic food.. Imagine that, in a island..
    Thanks a lot for caring..

  169. Marilee says:

Boy did this come at the right time.last few days have felt very depressed and down.I feel overwhelmed by stuff.trying to get healthy in all ways.physical, emotional and spiritual. So glad I found you.
    Thanks
    Marilee

  170. Tam says:

Thanks Chris for the encouraging reminders to value ourselves. I plan to restart my yoga practice and begin juicing.
Looking forward to your Wellness Month!

  171. Amy Perkins Alpert says:

Hi Kris! This couldn’t have come in a better month. When I get back from vacation in a week, I’m in for a very stressful few weeks at my soul- sucking job that I hate. Short of winning the lottery or being able to quit without another job lined up (been looking for 2 years), I will have to endure the hell that is coming my way. This help from you will make the road less rocky. Thank you, thank you!!!

  172. Noel says:

I just finished a year of surgeries and treatment for breast cancer. I am now focused on removing toxins from my life and preventing any recurrence. I also want to remove exposures from my kids and husbands lives. So looking forward to your month of prevention!

  173. Elle says:

    Ready to learn…

  174. Jo says:

Great post. I share your thoughts on the in-your-face pink money making bonanza. Even if I wear pink onesies and undies seven days a week, the colour itself won’t magically cure me! Laughter might, though, so maybe it’s not such a bad idea!

I’m challenged every day by invisible cancers – depression and an eating disorder – so I pledge to act “as if” I had all the courage in the world and “as if” all I wanted to eat all day was green (except Kermit, he’s too cute!), until this cool healthy lifestyle takes up permanent residence in all my cells and becomes second nature! And if by doing so my skin begins to glow and it inspires my cigarette-sneaking mom to down more celery juice – YAY!

  175. Suze says:

I totally agree about the over “pinking” of everything. Its a way to raise money for cancer
but I know there is a motivation for profit behind it. We need more prevention and I know
God has given you that purpose! You are real inspiration to everyone! Rock on girl!!

  176. Kathleen says:

It’s time to start practicing what I preach. For years I am always looking out at my family’s habits, and answering others questions on eating and exercising, always with to much on my plate to take time out for me. Time for a change. Looking forward to it.
    Thanks Kris!

  177. Leslie says:

Transitional September is the perfect time of the year to reboot. I’m looking forward to learning of new and better alternatives to the products and foods I currently consume. Please keep us money-strapped girls in mind!

  178. Lisa says:

Already living on an organic farm and fully aware of my committment to grow and buy organic, my pledge is to juice daily and bring in exercise. I’m looking forward to seeing the checklists so i can further de-gunk my living space. My buddy will be my husband.

Thanks, kris, for teaching me so much!!

  179. Janice says:

I rarely comment on things such as this, but I am so committed to make change. I have been an vegetarian for about 15 years and a vegan-dabbler lately as well. I am 60 years old and have made some enormous life changes recently …FOR ME! FINALLY! I have your books, I read your blog , I do most of the things you suggest, but there are some I really want to commit to. I want to live a vibrant , healthy, jazzed life. I am also a veteran Montessori teacher of precious preschool/kindergarten children…. what better stage of life to educate families than this on healthy nutrition for healthy bodies and brains!!!!Thank you Kris… can’t wait to get started.

  180. Caro says:

Oh my goodness, your timing is impeccable. I cannot wait – you have me completely psyched!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  181. Liz Baxter says:

    Kriss
Many thanks for all the energy you put into sharing all your research. You are an angel xx
I have been following you for some time and feel so much better physically & spiritually.
I will use this month to reinforce what I have learned and add to my knowledge.
    Inspired already
    Liz xx

  182. Rock on Kris! I absolutely LOVE your tips and communicating energy, so powerful! Thanks so much for sharing all of this with us 🙂

This month, I commit to start integrating more plant-based + organic meals into my diet and I commit to take more time for myself to meditate and visualize. I’ve wanted to do this for a while now but never took the plunge, I feel I’m ready to start a new lifestyle 🙂

  183. Holly says:

I love the way you’re making prevention about abundance Kris! I think that’s always been a big time kicker for me in the idea of prevention- it feels like such a big big idea and it seems to have only to do with whittling down and with sacrifice. Bla!
With this in mind I’m going to pledge to not look at the big overwhelming picture but to make small shifts each day that bring more options, more abundance and more health to my life. Why think sacrifice when you can think pleasure!?
    XXXOOO

  184. Myla Kent says:

Oops, forgot to include my prevention month goal: to complete the healthy home checklist and get rid of the ick. I did a 41 day juice fast (reboot with joe) and now that my body is toxin free (it’s an amazing feeling), I’m very amped to get my home the same way. thank you so much for this!! xo, M

  185. Chelsey says:

Thank you Kris for all that you do! My goal for this prevention month is to up my jucing. For my birthday my wonderful family bought me a juicer. This is a BIG upgrade in comparision to the one I had, which was on its last leg. So happy to have a family that supports me and I think with their support I will be able to achieve my goal.

    Happy Prevention Month!

  186. Myla Kent says:

You are entirely too wonderful for words (but I’ll try)– thank you for this! (I’m turning 48 in a couple of weeks, and as I’ve lost my Mom (when I was 16) and two of my sisters (recently) to cancer (all diagnosed at age 43), my life right now is all about doing all I can to fight what for most of my life has seemed like the inevitable. Kris you are and continue to be such an inspiration to me, and I’m truly grateful. xo, M

  187. Chantal Hartwell says:

To commit to buying more sustainable and healthy skin care products. To commit to meditation everyday and yoga. To commit to add more organic produce into my meals. To commit to a better me everyday!

  188. Laura says:

I am so looking forward to this! Over the last few years I’ve made great strides in improving my diet and lifestyle and get toxins out of my home, but there is still work to do. I pledge to continue working on my diet, get more exercise and to share these good habits with my son.

  189. Shawn Faules says:

Working towards a plant based diet. Thanks for all the ideas.

  190. Annie says:

Thanks for your hard work Kris! Your passion for wellness is contagious…
I pledge to work hard each day on my personal wellness plan with love and kindness for myself. My hubby will be my wellness buddy…together we will set a great example for our boys.

    xoxo Annie

  191. Gouri Kayal says:

I commit to furthering my knowledge base, I would like to be able to use the information to help my patients.

  192. imagebloke says:

This is truly amazing. I watched a documentary about your some good years ago, I still remember lots of things about it and I am really happy you are here, good health, and also helping people to change their lives, take care of themselves this is absolutely brilliant God Bless you dear.

    Image bloke

  193. Melody Fordham says:

My pledge is to exercise every day!!

  194. Melissa says:

Thank you for being such an inspiration! I “stumbled” across you “Crazy Sexy Cancer” while how recovering from cancer surgery and from that day I knew we are given exactly what we need, when we need it!

  195. Caroline says:

Thank you kris for your amazing inspiration and spirit!!

I commit to fresh juice every day that I am not working (it’s a start)

I commit to meditate at least 15 minutes every single day.

There, that’s it. I promise not to overcommit!

  196. Jack Bryan says:

Thanks, Kris. You’re the best. I’m very excited about September.

  197. Christi says:

I will recharge my adrenals by ridding some stress and MINDFULLY eating. I will rest more and get more sleep.

  198. Tammy Collado says:

My goal this month is to be more compassionate with myself as I am gentler on myself in dealing with my fibromyalgia. My goal is to be consistent in my meditation and yoga practice, as well as, my diet.

Thanks Kris for being so upbeat and making this fun!

  199. KellyM says:

This month I would like to work on getting back into making fitness part of my everyday routine. Maybe just walking everyday but doing something so that I am moving and using my glorious self every single day. My neighbour is always game to join in and so I think I’ll ask her to join me.
    Thanks for the inspiration !!

  200. Sarah says:

My goal this month is scheduling and meal planning. I’ve thrown the schedule out the window in the last 2 months or so and I am not getting enough sleep and I don’t have healthy nourishing meals ready when hunger strikes. I am taking back my body. My DH and I are about to become parents for the 1st time via adoption and I will be much less stressed if I am doing those 2 things. “Strategy is better than willpower!”

  201. Nessie says:

    Hi Kris,

I love your newsletter and especially your commitment to improving the vitality of, well, everyone really!

I have just bought a Tribest personal blender and my commitment is to have at least one green smoothie a day and to try and find a green smoothie that my 5 and 3 year olds will drink too 🙂

I look forward to the coming month!

    In health,
    Ness

  202. Mandi says:

This month I pledge to make time for myself and to make more healthy choices – looking forward to the blog this month!

  203. Jacquelyn says:

Love you Kris! I pledge to finally take advantage of free yoga week this year, smile and laugh more with friends, infuse love into the foods I’m eating and love my body completely. Like your fellow Hay House writers Denise Linn & daughter Meadow Linn and Pam Grout say…when we infuse love into our food those loving vibrations enter our bodies helping us to heal. 🙂 Can’t wait for this Prevention Month – rock on Kris!

  204. robyn k says:

i love your stuff!! always inspirational and i have made sooo many adjustments and tweak in my own life… unless peeps who profess to own guns are pro-cancer don’t see how they can be against any of your positive, proven well thought out lessons xx fit and healthy and shooting paper targets x

  205. Amanda says:

I loved this post! How appropriate to consider prevention as we drift into autumn.

My pledge is to continue my commitment to juicing daily, increase my yoga practice, start writing in my beautiful journal ( which I purchased some time ago ! – why am I hesitating here ?) and to persevere with meditation. Prevention makes so much sense …keeping prevention top of mind is the way to go .;-)

My buddy will be my husband who has taken a liking to our morning juices and is even taking up yoga !

Thanks Kris for your continued inspiration – you are remarkable and a great wellness leader.

  206. Kris, This is embarrasing but Ive managed to fall off my purple fitness pony for almost a year living in the shadows of pretzel twisting yoga jedi stretches, running 6 miles, and doing lunges while shopping in the mall. Now I feel defeated in fitness barely able to climb the steps to the vegan food cart let alone stradle my pony. But TODAY you’ve inspired me to love myself publicly to get back on and while a specific fitness goal would leave me running for hills of defeat I AM commiting to surrendering and ASKING FOR HELP from my peeps, my grateful lil viewers on my blog and social media sites. I can commit to asking for help in support for fitness to find my heart once again. Thank you for the inspiration to do that!

  207. Heather says:

I just finished my 15 month treatment plan for Melanoma and this prevention month couldn’t come at a better time! I’m 23 years old and need to regain my focus on healing (treatment can really screw with your brain). I need to de-cloud and focus on me and what I need to do for the rest of my life to maintain a balance.

  208. Jenn says:

I’m pledging to be more consistent with self care practices. Thank you for doing what you do!!

  209. Anne says:

    Love it!
I am addicted to smoothies, have been for 15+ years, but wanna give juicing a go. You make it look amazing! I also need to remember to rest when I need it. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia a few years ago and following my “fibro diet” {gluten free, dairy free, as much organic gmo free fruits n veggies as possible} has helped me immensely. Feeling so good I’m back to yoga recently!! My 17 year old daughter is my buddy, and we love what you’re doing, lady! Xx

  210. Alicia says:

Hello! My goal this month is to take my body back by juicing more and getting outside to move more. I have an 11 month old baby boy and had a really rough pregnancy that resulted in months of physical therapy and am now happily pain free, but way behind with my self care. I will be sharing this with and motivating my mom, who is pre-diabetic and having intestinal issues at the super young age of 53!
We both first “met you” while watching a documentary called “hungry for change” on Netflix last winter, back when I was still in a world of hurt, and you helped spark my self healing approach that ultimately changed my way of living. Thank you 🙂

  211. Sheryl says:

I’m in! Thank you for this, Kris! Prevention IS the best medicine and yes, has a positive impact on our world and those around us!
I’ve never felt better in my life since being “forced on” (at first… I had no idea what I was missing!) a plant based diet and getting consistent, reasonable exercise (not GI Jane as you describe it so well)… I have more energy and clarity of mind at 47 with Stage IV cancer than I’ve ever had in my life before…
My goal this month… to learn how to live with less stress in/on my body, of all kinds (emotional, mental, from foods, environment, etc…) to stop cancer in it’s tracks… I no longer need it (or the stress for that matter!) in my life, thank you very much! I’m told I’m “incurable”.. I beg to differ… xoxo

  212. Wendy says:

My goal is to learn more every day!

  213. Jennifer Giuffre-Donohue says:

I have a lot of goals that I need to work on, but I’ll take baby steps here so I don’t dump it all after the first week..LOL…My goal is to feel better and to start by getting more water and green juice in my diet. Thank you for Prevention Month. Can’t wait to spread the word!

  214. Marnie Donovan says:

I commit to transitioning into fall and all of the hectic activities that come with it with the same sense of control
over my diet, exercise and self care plan that I have established so far this year.
I commit to moving my body in some way, everyday.
I commit to seeping my yoga and meditation practice. I commit to spending time everyday preparing fresh foods for
    me and my family.
I commit to spending quality time with my husband, son and my furry boy Swell.
I commit to giving my clients caring and professional service.
I commit to serve my community and to keep a joyful heart everyday.
Thank-you Kris, for all that you do!
    Marnie

  215. Cristie Ritz says:

Self-care. I preach it all the time but I’ve not been heeding my own advice for quite some time. I pledge to start now.

  216. Linda says:

Thanks for calling out the manufactures Pink ribbon nonsense…. Capitalism needs to have high integrity.
You go girl. You inspire . You are a true warrior friend to us all.
I intend to increase my awareness. For me it’s digestion issues, keeping the gut flora balanced …, a challenge for a coffee drinker. Thanks, Kris , you are the best!!!

  217. Tracy Hall says:

I loved your post, Kris and am feeling jazzed to get my preventin’ on! My big commitment to prevention this month (apart from some sweet juicing and blending!) will be to seriously investigate ways to do away with some of the things causing the most stress and unhappiness in my life, especially the job that is out of alignment with how I want to live my life. It may take longer than a month to resolve but really, it gets moved to the next level from now.

Although she doesnt know it yet, my wellness buddy is my awesome friend Vanessa. We help keep each other on track and want the very best for each other.

    Happy Prevention Month everyone!

    • Vanessa Burton says:

Fantastic post Kris! I loved it!

My big commitment to prevention this month is to work on some of the emotional stuff which keeps creating the space for me to get in my own way.

I am super excited to be supported by and supporting my wellness buddy Tracy. We absolutly do want the best for each other.

I’m looking forward to the months ahead.

      Xx

  218. Annie says:

I pledge to incorporate more vegetarian and/or vegan recipes into my weekly meals. I’m not ready/willing to completely “give up” all meat, dairy & my lovely chocolate as that feels totally closed in & overwhelming to me. However, the idea of “adding in” more vegetarian & vegan foods/meals into my diet is EXCITING and enticing and doesn’t make me feel like I’m being pushed down into a box.

Thanks for your leadership & inspiration!

  219. merrie.skaggs@gmail.com says:

I love your saucy, sassy writing style that wraps up your good and caring heart. You care for yourself and us, too, and you model the importance of loving in that order. As the mother of four daughters and the granny of two granddaughters, my prevention goal is to take care of my health first during this prevention month of September. That translates into regularly exercising and juicing.

  220. I will absolutely share!

I soooooooooo agree with you that it starts with prevention (healthy organic food, exercise and positive thoughts is a great start…) and that we have to stop putting our health in the hands of our government (hell no!), pharmaceuticals companies (yikes, no freakin’ way!) or even doctors (GASP!)

Let’s teach prevention in schools! I wish my teachers had told me my thoughts create my reality and that I get to create an amazing life if I choose so. Nonetheless, now I know and now I get to share my knowledge and empower women to create a life they love.

You’re creating an amzing movement Kris!
    XO

  221. Elizabeth says:

Firstly, thanks Kris for being an amazing inspiration to so many people all over the world, you are an amazing person!!

My prevention pledge for this month is to work on preventing stress in my life (or lowering the health impact it has on me). I aim to focus on building my yoga and meditation practice, cleaning up my diet, and spending more time with those I care about. I want to share this pledge with my mum – my wonderful wonderful mum! She needs to get a little less stressed as well and I hate to see her when she is frustrated or upset . . . so even though she is in Australia and I live in the UK, I believe we can still be prevention buddies and help each other to stay motivated and inspired.

    Elizabeth xx
