My Crazy Sexy Self-Care Planner

Hi Sweet Friends,

I love you. I do.

And one of my absolute favorite things is tending to the people I care about. Making a scrumptious plant-happy dinner for family and friends, problem-solving with my team or colleagues and spending quality time caring for my disabled dog (#gobuddygo!) are just a few of the ways I show my love.

But sometimes, when I don’t take care of myself, doing for others can be too much.

Having a solid self-care base is the only way I can maintain my health, my business, my relationships and my sanity. And I bet I’m not alone, which is why I created a self-care planner for you. Download it for free below (I think it’ll help you as much as it helps me).

So what does self-care mean?

It’s simple—it’s about supporting yourself. Listening and tending to your needs, creating boundaries so that you don’t get exhausted, fueling your body instead of draining it and practicing the art of loving yourself. Scars, wounds, age spots and all. And in case you were wondering, self-care is not selfish—it’s responsible. You don’t serve yourself or anyone else (your dreams included!) if you’re too pooped.

Now, I know we all have a lot on our plates. But did you also know that you’ll be more effective if you start your day with energy-creating practices rather than diving in and pushing till you drop? That’s why it’s so important to carve out sacred, non-negotiable self-care time. So how can we do that?

Find what works for you and be gentle. Perhaps begin with 10-15 minutes of centering meditation—or even just words of kindness. I like to start my day by saying “Good morning, sweet Kris! I love you,” that always puts a smile on my face. Explore whatever makes you feel loved, centered and cared for.

What self-care looks like for me:

  • Honoring the real Kris, not the Kris I think I should be one day
  • Hiking at least 3 times per week (stretching too)
  • Journaling
  • Listening to guided meditations & uplifting spiritual talks while snuggling with my favorite blanket
  • Nourishing my body with green juice, green smoothies and greens
  • Lights out at 10pm, eyes open at 6am—sleep rocks
  • Accepting help from others
  • Releasing resentment, anger and frustration—the mental blocks that make me cranky
  • Connecting with my close circle of friends and family, and not feeling guilty if I can’t connect with everyone else
  • Watching movies that inspire me, while cuddling with my dogs and my man
  • Taking an Epsom salt bath with a few drops of essential oils

What self-care is not:

  • Forcing myself to stay awake to answer every single email
  • Saying yes to obligations I dread
  • Hanging out with people who drain me
  • Grudgingly slogging to the gym because women’s magazines tell me that my ass should be 3 inches higher
  • Demolishing all of the cake when I’m sad (all of it)
  • Having a harsher set of standards for myself than I have for others
  • Drinking too much, too often
  • Smoking. Period. Ever. End of story. I quit that over a decade ago and will never go back
  • Helping and serving others more than I help or serve myself

Plan, Act, Repeat

When it comes to long-term solutions, creating new habits is key. Guess what? I wasn’t born drinking green juice, but after years of practice it’s a daily do. When you’re embarking on something new, especially something as important as self-care, set yourself up for success by making a short, do-able plan (not an epic to-do list!). Having a clear picture of what you’re going to do before you actually do it will make the changes much easier.

Planning my success is how I run my health and my business—and I’m the Chief Unicorn of both. So whether you’re committing to a brisk walk in the mornings, juicing before work or getting a massage on the weekend—mapping out your goals and when you’ll fit them into your schedule is how you’ll make them happen, captain!

To get you started, I created this downloadable Self-Care Planner. Get yours below.

self-care infographic downloadable health

In the planner, you’ll get a snapshot of what a week of nourishing your mind, body and spirit can look like, along with a few suggestions to get you started. You’ll also get an affirmation from me each day, and space to plan your self-care for the morning, afternoon and/or evening (the timing and frequency is up to you). Plus, at the end of each day, you can write about how taking care of your glorious self feels. (Hint: Awesome!)

Your turn: Share one self-care action you’ll take this week in the comments below.

Peace & planning,

Last year my daughter went through alcohol withdrawal – one year now and she is thriving!!! After her process, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. My sister and I took him to all treatments and procedures and he is now cancer free. I am completely drained. I have no energy to do the things I know I need to get over this bump. I am far better at caring for others than for myself so … thank you for the reminder to listen to my own issues and not undermine them. This has given me a real push to stop, think and focus. Namaste.

  2. Francesca says:

    Dear Kris,
you are 100% right!! In my case I’ve been doing volleyball all my life but quit 5 years ago when I finished my first degree. Besides missing the championships, I really missed training. Due to many reasons I wasn’t able to train properly for years! but lately I committed, bought a few stuff and start working out at home 3/4 times a week!
    I feel soooooooo much better!
Than, add the right omega 3 and a good night sleep, I feel like a baby!
so you can give the 100% in every other thing you have to do!

    xx from Italy

I will make the call that I need to in order to have more peace of mind

  4. Mary says:

I’m going to release the anger I have at my sister. I’ve carried it for years and it’s exhausting. I’m realizing that it’s really not that important to stay angry with her. Hopefully, we can get back to loving each other again without all the tension involved.

  5. Linda Jordan-Clark says:

  10. Amy K. Furler says:

THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…MUCH!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!! And there’s no smoke-blowin’ going on here. I ‘met’ you through Hay House Writer’s Workshop last year, even before my diagnosis in December of breast kanser (see what I did there?? ;)). It’s been SO overwhelming among other things and whenever I need to reconnect with my sanity I pick up one of your books or come back to your site/blog/videos/etc. and you help me once more. My gratitude for you, yours and all of the FABULOUS connections, resources, good cheer, rawness is boundless. You are a well-established beacon in the darkness for me, and now MY spouse and friends. Now I am facing a choice between two chemo plans and am utterly terrified which can be so paralyzing. I am getting there. YOU ARE ABSOLUTLEY RIGHT, THAT SELF-CARE IS A RESPONSIBILITY. I think that’s such a tough nut to crack, for womyn especially, as so many of us were raised to hang our Self-worth hats on our ability to care for others before and in stead of ourselves. I just want to take a moment to convey how valuable what you are offering here IS to someone like me right here, right now. You are teaching me things and giving me things that I will use perhaps for the rest of my life. And you do it with and through humor and being real about shit–that’s just magic, girl. From one Unicorn in Charge in Training to the Beacon Unicorn…GRATITUDE, GRATITUDE, GRATITUDE…..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please continue to take good care of yourself and yours. Love you, Amy xoxox

  11. I’m a little rough, i still have my juicer, but I killed 3 nutibullets, ok maybe putting beats, nuts and everything else, lol i know why must it be all in one drink instead of a few, actually my brother scored me some Chaga from northern canada i decided y use a hammer when I can destroy my 3rd nutrabullet lol it got stuck under the blades and scoured the bottom killing my motor, now I know I already destroyed 2 with liquid so y would i put Chaga in alone was dumb, a blonde moment, should I relax take a breath and get the new one, even though I don’t heat my soup, had problems with a yummy butternut squash in a slow cooker, was so yummy, but I was so bloated i couldn’t move, thanks again for being you and spreading your love, Jeremy Michael Tobias

  12. Self-care is SO important! And as busy women we often times neglect ourselves first. I find journaling and meditating to be very helpful. I meditate every day for at least 30 minutes, I plan on purchasing your mediation guide to add to my practice. I LOVE the self-care planner, downloading it now!

  13. Mary says:

As a nurse for over 40 years, I acknowledge that it is easier to “care” for others than it is for myself. I get that. I love helping others. I know I can connect with others in a kind and gentle way, in a way that is supportive and positive. I am ready to be a leader by setting an example of self care for others. I’m wondering if maybe I can do this…

  14. Beth says:

This week I will make a habit of listening to one of your meditations first thing every morning, so I can start my day at peace and in balance. I will listen to another of your wonderful meditations before every bed time, to relax and let go of anxiety and conflict, in preparation for a restful sleep. Thank you for all you do to help us, Kris!

  15. oh kris, i’m so glad to have found you! i am tucked away in a local coffee shop, enjoying a lovely hour of time alone that nourishes my spirit, thinking on these things … and then i stumbled across this blog of yours. yay!! so much wisdom and encouragement. thank you!

  16. Laurel says:

Kris, I would like to express how much I appreciate and love who you are and how much you help all of us, but everyone has already said it. I started following you before my Feb. diagnosis with cancer. I try to follow the green juice regiment but struggle with the “greeness.” I an on my 3rd month of my 4 month chemo prescription. I also struggle with self care, sometimes that amounts to simply laying on the couch trying to sip water.
That being said, thank you Kris, for your love and contribution to our wellbeing. After I get out I feel my pity pot and get back into you writings I am ‘lifted’ and encouraged.

    Thank you
    Laurel

  17. Al says:

    Kris,

I saw you on Oprah Super Soul session lessons. Amazing!!!
I feel better by just READING your heartfelt motivational tips and life ideologies. I am excited about reading, writing, and Accepting ‘the ME that I am today’. I have lived my life aspiring about the future me and her Super life. I realize now I cannot workout hoping for the Future Me. I have to learn to love the ‘me I see in the mirror each and everyday of life.’ I am super sexy cool. Thanks Kris. I look forward to this adventure and new course in my life.

  18. Teresa Callahan says:

Thank you, Kris! I love your inspiration, wit and common sense. You are like a beacon!!! Shine on!! Love, xox, Teresa

  19. Nony Morgan says:

Hello my darling… you’re an angel bearing sanity-restoring gifts!

Perfect timing for the Self-Care Planner – and thanks for suggesting the baby steps to get myself back on track for taking better care of my SELF. Otherwise I would be stressing out trying to do EVERYTHING I think I ‘should’ be doing.

So here’s my gift to myself… I’m following your example of “in bed by 10 and up at 6”. I don’t function well on the 5 or 6 hours of sleep I’ve been getting. And because it keeps me centered and more productive, I’m recommitting to starting each day with meditation and journaling.

  20. Kris, my sister Gail Larsen loves you! Come hike the Smoky Mountains with me. Thank you for your daring.

  21. Priti says:

Thank you for the wonderful post. Such an important lesson sent in the most loving way.
I be taking time this weekend for myself review some upcoming commitments and eliminate some. Thank you

  22. Elizabeth Bridger says:

One way I plan to care for myself is to stop holding myself to impossibly high standards. It only sets me up for failure and makes me feel miserable.

  23. Dear Kris,
Thank you for the constant amazing inspiration and for the awesome checklist, its always great to have a plan and a routine!

A while back i had to make a radical commitment to self love, to ensure i get back my health first of all. So among the goals and objectives i set during that time, number one was “Learn to love myself no matter what”. It still is.

The one action that has made a huge impact is regularly asking myself during the day ” How do i feel?” and always choosing to do what it takes to steer my feelings towards peace, joy, acceptance and so on. With practice it became much easier. After doing this, i found i am much happier, most of the time and i give a much greater version of myself to my loved ones, clients and the world.

    Love and many thanks.

  25. Kelly says:

    Kris!
Everything you do is exactly what I want to do with my life and the messages I want to spread. I’m going to school for Natural Resource Conservation because I’m insanely passionate about the environment and sustainability, but I am also passionate about wellness, self-love, animals, veganism, and positive, natural living! You are my role model. I read all of your weekly love notes and love learning from you.
Thank you for everything you do 🙂 I hope to one day spread the wealth of knowledge around like you do!

  26. Cloud9 says:

Thank you for sharing this, Kris! You’re so inspirational!

Taking time to go on long walks or bike rides with my son. 😉

  27. Pam says:

I am trying to do mindfulness with my eating.

  28. Jacqui says:

As mothers, wives, daughters, loving, caring people we will always put our needs to the bottom of the pile. I learnt the hard way that you have got to put yourself near the top because otherwise you cannot function properly. Then you begin to fail the people you are so desperate to help.
Thank you for providing the inspiration and motivation to stand back, see that we need to look after ourselves and then get on and do it. Its not selfish to look after yourself its a necessity. Best wishes to everyone out there heeding your advice. X

  29. Margaret says:

Kris- thank you for the loving reminder! Spring is here, maybe a bit cold in the North East and I will be up and out early tomorrow! Part of my self care ritual, which I’ve neglected, is taking a walk in the yard in the mornings, before anyone is up, warm cup of tea in hand, loving the dew between my toes and the company of the birds, fox and deer in the woods. I am blessed. I too, like Tammy below, have been plagued with tummy trouble- probably anxiety, and I know a little self care- I share lots of your non-negotiables and time outdoors goes a long way! xo Margaret

  30. gina says:

    I love you So Much!!!
I am stealing this: Good morning, sweet Kris! I love you! (using my name instead, lol)

  31. Sheri says:

    Dear Kris,
You are an inspiration. Honestly. I saw you at I Can Do It in Toronto a few years ago and bought Crazy Sexy Kitchen. It was like reading candy. Every time I receive an email from you, I smile…and some days I just don’t want to but I do anyway. Thank you for being so you. Self care in a busy life is a wonderful challenge. I commit to spending some tea time with my girlfriends and having a few great belly laughs. I didn’t realize how much I miss them until I saw this. Thank you, Kris!! 🙂

  32. Leigh says:

Thanks Kris for shining a light on this subject and for the self-care planner. I’m taking care of myself this week by getting enough sleep–you’re right, it rocks! I’m also planning one home spa night per week–shut off the electronics, take that long bath with Epsom salts and rosemary oil, then lotion for my skin including a foot massage–spa night.

  33. Paloma says:

You are so beautiful sharing this sacred stuff, if only we learnt how to nurture ourselves as young girls!

  34. Patty says:

Thank you for being such an inspiration! I am a 9-year breast cancer survivor (whoot whoot!) and after my treatments I decided to become a Reiki Master in order to help heal others. My business is going strong, and I’ve added daily self-Reiki treatments to my self-care regimen, and it’s been amazing! I’ve recently committed to adding more exercise and yoga to that regimen, plus I’ve also purchased your new Juicing book (can’t wait to give those recipes a try!) and I love your Meditation for Busy People. Thank you for being such an inspiration with your own healing journey!

  35. Brenda says:

I love the idea of going on three hikes each week. I’m going to try to add spending time outdoors at least twice in the week (Saturdays are always outdoors!).

  36. Elisabeth says:

This week I will go back to yoga class! My hubby had an accident and life has been upside down for a few weeks. Now that it is settling, I will return to yoga, and daily meditation.
Thanks so much for everything, beautiful Unicorn Kris! XOXO

  37. Jocelyn says:

I love YOU, too! (really… you are the best). Thank you for your endless inspiration that hits home every time. xo

  38. Jane says:

I’m getting a neck massage after lugging around a back pack all last week, I could really use it. I’m also getting a pedicure today because along with that backpack came tons of walking.

  39. Diana says:

Hi, Kris, Been a follower since the beginning and love how you continue to show up “as a message” . Self care….perfect timing. Although I am aware of that in my daily life, lately I need reminders. My husband had a stroke (his 2nd. His 1st was 14 yrs ago) 3/18. I have been able to stay with him for which I am eternally grateful, from day one in ICU and now in Rehab. As he learns to do everything again, walk, speak, etc., I realized how many times he is told, when looking to stand or sit with balance, to “find his center” …. And it occurred to me that was a message for me, too. It is so important for me to stay balanced, connected to my Center…..and part of that is to practice self care. So thank you, Kris, for this timely reminder. You continue to be such a light! Namaste.

  40. Perfect timing! I have just started the cleanse for the 2nd time and find it is so much more than a cleanse. It is becoming conscious of myself and what I Choose to put in my body. I need reminding that me, my schedule, and my passions are most important when dealing with kids, work and an upcoming crowdfunding campaign! I need me to be healthy.

  41. So right on!! I often compare myself to you Kris! And look at all the amazing things you are creating in the world while you are on your healing path! I think why can’t I do more of my work in the world as I navigate a ass kicking Illness! I think if Kris can do it why can’t I !! I know I have to let that go and just be inspired! The self care piece is so good to hear! And your so wise to honor it the way you do! I remember you said .. That if one part of your life sucks then another must be rocking! So I look into my daughters eyes and see I am doing something well! I plan my June wedding “)
Even though i got some big healing to do before before I put my gown on “)So all I can do now is self care, and pray! So really know you got a lady in New Paltz who thinks of you everyday and how brave you are ! And I am deeply inspired and love your grace! As my 12 year old daughter says… Mom your obsessed with Kris ?!! I just look up to anyone who can look an illness experience in the face and make something so beautiful out if!! That is my dream and desire! I Just have to start where I am and take care of myself! Much love and peace wild beautiful unicorn mama

  42. Rachael says:

Thank you for the reminder – and examples – about self care (and what it isn’t). I will have fun with friends on a winery tour as my holidays end, but I will also prepare for work immediately following this mini holiday with clean food, tea, early nights and quiet time, on my own and with my young kids. Thanks again X

  43. Laura says:

Sweetheart! My self care NON-negotiable practice for EVERY-SINGLE-DAY is Juicing. I learned that from you and will be forever grateful. Before Crazy Sexy Diet I didn’t even know that Juicers existed (Yes, I had to admit it). Now, every single morning, me and my hubby make a delicious a Juice (Granny Smith Apple, De-Anjou Pear, Cucumber, Carrot, Kale or Spinach). It makes me feel great from the inside out and reminds me of how healthy tastes like. Thanks for all the wonderful things you give to the world. Love and Sincere Appreciation, Laura!

  44. Elizabeth says:

Thanks for this great resource Kris! My self care, that I am already doing and loving, invovles quiet time every morning. This is non-negotiable. This time includes breathing, prayer, affirmations, visualization and some inspirational reading. It sets the tone for my day and has gotten me through some tough times. Thanks for all you do!

  46. Sally says:

Hello Kris, I have recently found your blog and really enjoy your articles! This in particular resonates with me… as a mother caring for my family I sometimes forget about our own health and well being. One of the greatest gifts I give to nourish my body is a natural supplement called Amino Boosters that contains essential amino acids and powerful growth factors that help to balance the body physically, mentally and emotionally. Along with a healthy diet and exercise this really is a game changer! Here is the link if interested to include in your nutritional program. Thankyou. http://www.authenticbeing.com.au

  47. kevin says:

Kris- Thanks for sharing the care planner. Will pass this on as well. We were speaking to Dr Claudia Welch last week about how to fit self-care in the busy day, especially surrounding the Ayurvedic ideas. She had some cool thoughts that we will share in a video later. Two right off the bat that folks can start with-
1- Initially, make self-care in the morning, before you begin your day busy-ness. It is easier.
2-Do something simple and small at first, maybe a little self massage in the shower once a week. (using castor oil) Then add more days as the time permits and you love the routine.
    Hope this helps some.
    Be well

  53. Ashley says:

Hi Kris. Thank you for this. I’ve been feeling sad and overwhelmed lately. I haven’t been carving out the time to care for myself and it’s showing. I’m so glad I decided to catch up on my reading and to find this.

  54. Kristina says:

This is amazing Kris! Every word resonated so much with me and I thank you for that! Printing the planner as we speak… 🙂

  55. Michele says:

    I will make a green smoothie 🙂

  56. Autumn says:

I will not beat myself up for taking care of me. I will continue to send myself love with each meditation. I might even allow myself to play video games for a few minutes. I usually beat myself up mentally when I want to zone out on something like that. Also, next week I am going to volunteer at a horse rescue. I am very much looking forward to the love that I can give these sweet animals. Horses were my greatest love as a child.

  57. Caprice says:

Timeless, important conversation. Thanks for sharing!

  58. Susaye says:

Kris, I love your definition of self-care. In my personal and professional life, it is easy to let that go in favor of completing more ‘important’ things or things that need to get done. This is a good reminder that over exerting myself is not self-care. Keep it coming.

  59. cherry says:

I will spend time talking with my best friend over a healthy lunch.

  60. Hi Kris!
Thank you for creating and sharing such a cute planner! I am a huge fan of self care and I am actually speaking about it to a group of cancer patients and their caregivers this September. As a caregiver, I am often giving myself the slip when it comes to self care. It seems so simple that it is easy to push aside until later- and then of course, later never comes. Just getting enough sleep is so life-changing! I think being kind with your thoughts, allowing your emotions a space, receiving love and support from others, and believing in a loving universe are more ways to care for yourself.
Would you mind if I print off and share this planner with this group? I had imagined having participants create a list of behaviors to try, but this would be a lot more fun and just perfect!
    Please let me know.
    Thank you!
    Jessie

  61. Oma says:

    Thanks Kris,
This has come at a good time for me. I’m trying the Tapping and have Louise Hay’s books,
but just can’t seem to pull it all together.
You inspire me so much, and make me want to get started. Thanks again.

Saying “no” to things I don’t want to do or people I don’t want to be with makes me happy now. And not in a mean way at all. Actually in a very loving way. Years ago, I would have felt guilty and then that would have led to overeating, etc…. No more!!

  63. Leah says:

I LOVE this blog post and the self-care planner. As a Stage IV Hodgkin Lymphoma cancer conqueror, taking time out for self-nurture and self-care was my #1 (what I like to call) healing sutra.

Thank you thank you thank you, such an inspiration to me. I know your book has been out for awhile, but just wanted to let you know, it inspired me in my cancer healing program.

    Love,
    Leah

  64. Jena says:

This could not have come at a better time! I’m a newish mom (8 month old) also stay at home mom. I’ve been giving myself to everyone but me. And quite frankly feeling like I’m near failing at it all. I’m exhausted & overwhelmed & I’ve stopped taking time to care for myself. I was raised to think that caring for me was selfish. I’m beginning to see that I can be better to everyone by being better to me. Although I always feel there is no time I see now that I can (& will) carve out time to care for myself. I plan on taking a little quiet time each morning before the baby wakes up to do yoga & meditate. Then build on from there. Thank you for the support.

  65. Jeanique says:

    Dear Chris,
thank you I have forgotten how it feels to take care of myself, I am completely burn out and I need to reconnect with my soul, I have this big hole in my chest and I feel lots of shame and because I am tired I’m very sensitive to everything, I am going to make an effort to get better.
    Regards jeanique

    Hello Kris,

Your website is vibrate, refreshing and fun. I prefer simple, uncomplicated living and enjoyed reading the information you suggested for living a self managed, clean lifestyle.

    Thank you,
    TKB

  72. So excited.. at a stressful crossroad.. I LOVE YOUR BLOG.. MOVIE.. INFORMATION.. YOU INSPIRE ME..

  73. Dear Kris
I’m a fit 59 year old sparky person but I recently had a blood test indicating potential autoimmune disease and immediately booked acupuncture twice a week and got your CSD book off the shelf, bought a serious twin bore juicer and got it going twice a day and have started reducing stress and increasing rest and exercise to counteract a very intense and stressful job. I’ve just purchased your wonderful cookbook as well cook book as well.

I am of course concerned about my blood test result BUT have decided not to investigate the science for now or dwell on the many possibilities for grim diseases to take hold of me and instead and going to give myself 6 months to turn my body, mind and spirit around with you as my inspiration.

The advice is all there from you but if you have anything to add re autoimmune disease indication I’d love to hear it.

Meanwhile, I am so very grateful to have found your book and videos, u tube clips etc – every time I see chocolate or a cool glass of chardonnay I think of your extraordinary example and it refocuses my determination.

    Huge thanks! Nancy

Thank you for all your words of wisdom, your kindness and your humorous way of kicking our asses into gear! I always feel more grounded and centered when I start the week out with your blog filled with delicious affirmations. I plan to hike more with my beloved rescue dog, Gatsby, (instead of walking the same block over and over!), take 10 minutes of me time every day, (ie: learn meditation!), really commit to green juices or smoothies daily, (not just a couple a week), love me for who I am, and limit my vegan cupcake addiction to one a week!
Thank you for being an inspiration to so many. Your journey has supported me on a journey of my own.
    Peace and kindness,
    Julie

Im going off sugar cold turkey but helping the cravings w few supplements like glutamine & getting a massage.

  76. Stephanie says:

Thank you so much! I could see myself clearly in this article (over-commitment!!!). Even though I read and heard this kind of advice often, your words have really reached me and moved me. So from now on I’ll watch a little better. You doing an incredible work!

  77. Chara says:

Thank you, Kris. I am really trying to figure out what ‘self care’ means in a busy stage of my life, with small people who need me and a job. You make it seem simple and easy to wrap my head (and schedule) around.

  78. Krystle says:

I love your honesty in this piece. Self-care isn’t about beating ourselves to a pulp to be productive and then taking a moment or two to admire our hard work. Loving this life is so much bigger than sitting at a desk, demanding things. It’s about experiencing and giving and exploring. Thanks for the reminder to take a breath, and live.

  79. This is so lovely…Thank you for this download Kris!

I am all about self care. It radically changed my body and life.

There really is some major magic in taking time out for *me* on a regular basis. It really gets me in synch with the core parts of myself and is totally nourishing!
    Self-care helps me:

tune in to my true hunger signals (less compulsive eating and behaviors around food)
feel more feminine (calmer in my interactions with men and all my relationships)
be more appreciative of my body ( i’m not in my head all the time focusing on to-do’s)

I love this guide and will be trying it out this week!

    Love,
    Carla

  80. Nikki says:

Do you recommend any guided meditations or uplifting spiritual talks specifically?

  81. Val says:

Hola Kris! Right now i am focusing on my skin, and my self care treat is making a pumpkin mask.

I laos want to share with you that while I am doing this my father is fighting a pancreatic cancer. Thanks to god a friend gave him a book about the Gerson Therapy and we are hoping for him to go there! I am going to Florida to see him and I am bringing your books with me, I have recipes from your book already mark to cook for him!
Thank you so much! I am so grateful for having come across you, and your wonderful work!

  82. Sheryl says:

Yoga. Japanese Sencha tea. Lifting my face to the sun outside every possible day. Letting my dog teach me about happiness. Letting my cat teach me “no regrets”. Letting my family laugh and be silly. Being ok with being human. And, eating (spooning up, slurping) my husbands amazing salsa!

  83. Leisel says:

Wonderful! This is magic, thanks Kris. This is the first time I’ve come across your site and posts – you have such a beautiful, connecting way about you – I love it. We run a retreat in Bali each year and most of the gorgeous women who join us need exactly this right at the start – a little self kindness and nurturing care (and so do we!). It’s the very reason why we run the retreat and love what we do amidst the busyness of our own businesses, companies and families. There’s no direct profit in it but it’s oh so rewarding to see how we flourish with just a bit of time and space to get back to basics. It’s simple stuff that’s all too easy to lose sight of. Thanks so much for sharing. I’d love to share this little planner with our girls at next retreat – if you’re happy with that! It’s simple and they would love it…

  84. Oh, Kris! This is just oh-so-freakin-fabulous! I love it and FREE? We are all such lucky ducks. I too believe that without self-care, self-love and self-worth we can kiss our optimal beauty and health dreams goodbye. It is truly a huge part of living the life of our dreams…as is staying organized with all the amazingness life offers us daily. Thank you! Love, Danielle

  85. Kris, you’ll never know how much you’ve impacted my life. I know you hear this from a lot of women and girls, but truly, you’ve changed my life in so many ways since I first saw you on Oprah. Ever since, you’ve been a guide to me, a light of peace, for bulk of years in my life that were full of darkness, self betrayal, self hatred, and coming out to love myself, honor myself and look for the real me. You’ve also helped me overcome an eating disorder, without even knowing it. Thank you for being a light into my world. I’m going to share this great planner with my readers this week on my blog.
    Blessings,
    Heather McClees

  87. kaoutar says:

What to think of, what to do , or how to prevent demolishing a cake when you are ‘not well’ ?
Sometimes, it is just pure blindness, you don’t think of it a second, it seems just obvious that you NEED that cake or whatever it is, but the worst is when you eat that crap and you keep demanding something else. I mean how can I prevent that to happen again, because the feeling that comes after doing such a heroic act is just pure DEPRESSION.
    Thank you !

    • Usually by the time the strong NEED for demolishing cake has come around it can be pretty hard to stop. For me it feels like a speeding train.
      Here’s what i do.
First I ask myself Am I hungry?

if i’m not hungry but just want to “numb out” on something sugary, i physically move myself out of the environment, go for a walk, call a friend, or even curl on the couch and feel whatever it is I’m trying to avoid.
but sometimes you just want the thing or sometimes you actually are hungry.

if I am hungry and I want something, (cake or whatever) then i make sure it’s the best of the best, put it on a gorgeous plate, really allow myself to have it, savor it one bite at a time, and praise myself and my body for knowing how to process food easily (without my stress added to the mix).

      i hope that helps.
I know how easy it is to beat up on yourself after eating something you DON’T want to eat. No matter what, don’t expect perfection and give yourself lots of love and appreciation.

      xx
      Love,
      Carla

Really grateful to have found you….A friend gave my your “crazy sexy cancer tips” recently as i am on a breast cancer journey right now. I love being the CEO of my wellness company as you would say. I feel empowered to ask questions and be an active participant in my treatment plan. At the moment i am at the beach enjoying my good energy days between chemo treatments. A few days of journaling, walking, yoga, Stand-up paddling and anything else I choose to do!! Thank you for your take charge attitude and tools to help keep us on the dis-ease prevention track. I am eager to get back to my work as photographer + yoga teacher, but being quiet and listening to what my body is telling me is my job at the moment. Many thanks for your inspiration:)

  89. Ginny Hughes says:

This is just what I need right now! I was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago on my birthday, and had a bilateral mastectomy. My husband of over 30 years left shortly after my diagnosis, and hasn’t been seen or heard from since. So now I am a single mom with the most amazing special needs son in the entire world. We are losing our home, through foreclosure, lost our car, and we are trying to live on only $1420 a month! But..I AM ALIVE TODAY! I HAVE MY SON! Every day is a gift and I will take it! I can get pretty overwhelmed and down in the dumps. Kris gets me to pull myself up and keep on going! She is my inspiration!! Love you Kris!

  90. Ali says:

So fantastic! I love the tool of putting someone you love in your situation and doing what you would advise they do. Gold!

  91. Love this! So very true. If we can´t take care of ourselves it´s truly impossible to be the support we wish for the people around us. Love your list and YOU! Keep inspiring. Many hugs from Sweden!

  92. As a health coach I guide my clients to incorporate self-care into their life. Thank you for a great article and planner. Health is wealth and we need to nurture ourselves everyday.

  93. Layla says:

    Love this!!
I already said no to some things on my schedule I don’t really want to do. What a relief!!

  94. Cortney says:

I am LOVING this! I printed this and added it to my Day Timer 🙂 This weekend, I am taking my self on a date to a painting class! Cannot wait!

  95. Karla says:

Thank you so much for everything you do you inspire, help, and support all of us you are so amazingly beautiful inside and out and you are such an inspiration to me! I love you losts! Thanks again for everything beautiful 🙂

  96. Sadly, I am horrific at self-care. It always comes last on my very long list of things I’m always working to accomplish. Self-care usually happens by accident, in super small doses, or when I reach a breaking point.

I love the idea of scheduling a little self-love treat in each day, and being mindful about it. Instead of accidentally finding myself relaxing, I should mindfully relax and let go to make it more meaningful.

Kris Carr – you are BRILLIANT! Muah.

  97. I’m dedicating a lot of me-time to EFT right now, which I know you’re a fan of, Kris! There are so many layers to peel back, it can sometimes feel sad, or like I’m going to have to dig so deep to get to the root of an issue I don’t even want to deal with. But as Brene Brown said, if you don’t know how to do vulnerability, then vulnerability is doing you. I’m sick of it. It does hurt to look at the real issues, but I know it will be empowering when I feel the positive effects of clearing the blocks. Now I need to get me some tea, and later on some green juice, to power through it!

  98. Jenny R says:

Thank you Kris. I needed that today. After a few too many weeks of too many working hours, eating too much cake and junk, stressing myself to the point of tears, and too little time that is meant for myself and not for others, I am ready to either take a hike from the world or hop a jet plane for a life pause. Your article is giving me a boost in the right direction, and i say thank you.
    Jenny

  99. Maria says:

Kris, this is amazing! I love the planner! Thanks so much for putting this together!

  100. Jenn says:

Practice a restorative yoga pose and give myself Reiki as I’m going to sleep. Thank you!

  101. Mahg says:

Thank you so much. This is exactly what I needed to read. I’ve become more focused on my goals, and while it is empowering and affirming, I am now feeling exhausted from all that has been happening these past days. I’m in bed, knowing that I want to revisit the goals and look things up, but there’s not much energy in me right now. And while I love that new things have been coming to my life, I know that I can’t be feeling like this every day. I very much want the changes, but never at the expense of my well-being. So I very much need to care of myself so that I can be connected and present enough to be in touch with what my soul wants, and be able to manifest that energy into beautiful things.

  102. Stacy Porter says:

Kris, you are wonder woman. It was such a blessing seeing you this weekend in DC at I Can Do it! You inspire me so much…and somehow produce things like this planner right when I need it.

    Thank you! Xoxo

  103. This is so serendipitous! Absolutely perfect timing since this is what I’m working on in my personal life. Last week was my first set of midterms for my post-bacc degree and I had 5 exams in 8 days, which meant a lot less sleep than I wanted/needed, way too much coffee/energizing substances that are terrible for me, and so much stress I had stomach aches every day. I was looking forward to the weekend because I was supposed to have a hot date aaaand he stood me up. SO, no self-pity but instead self-care! Because I’m still worth it even if I’m stressed out and busy and especially when a silly guy doesn’t think so!

  104. Alexis Meads says:

Awesome post Kris! I’m a self-love and self-care coach for women, but with running my own business I sometimes let my own self-care slip. And you’re right, every time I do my health and happiness goes out the window! So along with my clients, I am in a daily practice of self-love and remembering that taking care of me is the only way I can truly take care of others and the planet 🙂

    xo,
    Alexis

  105. You are the Queen, Kris. I love who you are and what you stand for. I have been on a self care “watch” after having the summer of my life and waking up to so many realizations. As a “do it all” mom of three with her own business, I realized I needed to make changes come this September when school started again. I have been honoring myself and my limitations, taking care to keep myself sane and healthy so I can realize my full joy every day. I love this post – and love the planner. Thank you – again – for all the great tools and resources you share!

  106. Bridget says:

Kris I LOVE how you write. You speak a special language and it makes it super easy to read, to listen, and to hear.
Your work is inspirational and I smile whenever my face comes across your site.

  107. Elsa Alexandra says:

Hi Kris. Thanks so much for sharing this, Just what I needed to hear! For years, I got used to doing, doing, doing to advance in my career. Recently, I’ve gotten married and become a mum. It’s a totally different ball game! Even though family is more important to me than my career and I am much happier now than I used to a couple of years ago, single and career-oriented, I find it tough sometimes to strike the right balance in my life. I still try to do too much and often get frustrated when I can’t be the perfect housewife, the greatest mum and the amazing business woman – whatever my mental picture of those is.
I reckon I ought to make self-care my top priority at this stage. The day after my daughter was born, just four months ago, I was up on my feet trying to host all the people who came to visit, etc. I haven’t given myself time to rest and heal properly. Yours is a great reminder!
Thank you for all the work you do. It really makes a difference.
    Elsa xo

  108. Faith says:

Thank you Kris for the reminder to schedule in time for me so that I am better able to serve others too. I’ve just printed off the schedule you have offered and will use it today to show myself my commitment to me, even though the day is half done. It’s never too late to be a little better. 🙂

  109. Jane says:

I am a two year cervical cancer survivor. I now am the chapter leader for the National Cervical Cancer Coalition for the Charlotte chapter. I remember how scared, alone and awful I felt as I was going through treatment. It is so hard to stay focused on the positive things. I did not really find out about you until after I went through treatment. But, I share you now with the women on my facebook page, and I thank you for your insight and passion to making this cancer country club a better place!

It is important to remember to take each day on its own and even if we can only do one thing for ourselves that is positive, it makes a difference.

You are a great inspiration, and a great role model for me. I hope I can help other women find hope and joy … just a little bit each day.

  110. Melissa Calhoun says:

Kris- I am a Yoga Instructor and Wellness Facilitator. I think your posts are brilliant, imaginative, creative, informative and fun. Every email from your site is like a little gift of zen. I can feel a positive vibe emanate from the screen. Thank you for caring about our planet and all that dwell here. Yours in continued health and daily bliss, Namaste, Melissa

  111. jen says:

Love this! Thank you for this and all you do Kris!

  112. Stacy says:

thank you! So, so, so important! I love your approach–thank you for inspiring me!

  113. Emily says:

I will wake up and smile at my reflection while saying an affirmation before doing anything else!!! (I’m normally not much of a morning person)

  114. Martine says:

THANK YOU KRIS!! This is so what I need right now. I struggle so much with self-care. It feels like something I “have” to do; it feels like a chore, not indulgent and nourishing like it’s supposed to. How do you handle it when self care feels like just another thing you need to check off your to do list?

    Big hug, Martine

  115. Elena says:

THIS is what I teach my clients, in my workshops and in my new program launching on Wednesday. We really are the most important asset in our lives. When we take divine care of ourselves, it’s a gift to everyone else in our lives (and business)

  116. Tess says:

This is exactly what I needed at the right time!! I’m going to eat salad every day .. even though colder weather is approaching, in my climate controlled office this should be do-able and a way to ensure I get a variety of veggies and protein

  117. Charmaine says:

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful planning template! I have tried numerous ways to plan my days and the end result is devastating as they ended up in the bin. The added affirmation is a beautiful way to enhance my day. Thank you!

  118. Margaret says:

Thanks, Kris!!! Just what I needed to read to help me tweak the daily routine to include more self-care.

  119. Super self-care template! I really love how you have the daily affirmations as part of the planner. Thank you for your on-going inspiration to be our best selves!

  120. Barbara says:

    I love you, Kris!

  121. Elisa Lionne says:

    Beautiful post Kris!
I especially like the tip to imagine someone else is in your situation and thinking about what advice you’d give them. We tend to be way more gentle with others than with ourselves. Treating ourselves with the same amount of loving care as we treat others will lead to well-being and happiness.
Since I had a lot of rehearsals for my recent dance performance my sleeping schedule came out of whack a bit. So this week I will focus on resetting my sleeping schedule.
    Thank you Kris! xx

  122. Audrey says:

I love you Kris Carr, I send you a bunch of love. I truly find you amazing! XXXXX

  123. Mara says:

Such a loving approach, Kris. Some of the women’s mags set women up for a cycle of self-abuse and depletion. I bet they’d INCREASE their readership if they loved women even more.

  124. Elizabeth says:

Wonderful post. I am actually going to swap your calendar for mine that I use to log my “self care” workouts. That is MY time…the time I get to exercise. I just have to solve the problem of little ones trying to get into the room and then me YELLING, “GET OOOOUUUUTTTT!!!!!!”
    Not good for reducing inflammation.
    Peace & Raw Health,
    Elizabeth

  125. Part of my self care is to honour the fact that I like my mornings quiet and alone.
Starting my morning right means I get to set the tone for my day which is uber importante.
These days it means sipping a cup of hot water + lemon + cayenne, a little yoga, a little meditation BEFORE opening my computer.

Oups and I forgot … it also means a warm snuggle with my fiance and with my 3 Schnoodles 🙂
You can meet the furry kids here (get ready for fuzziness).

  126. Gita says:

Thank you, Kris! Your words of peace & soul-affirming beauty are a balm for which the world is aching. Keep spreading the light, and know you are appreciated, admired, and that you make a difference. Om Shanthi Om.

  127. Beth says:

I left the D.C. I Can Do It conference with a plan to make an intentional self-care schedule for myself so that loving myself becomes a habit instead of something I only think about when I get burned out. Then I received this email in my inbox with a self care planner??? Thank you God! Thank you Kris Carr. Synchronicity is beautiful.

  128. Great advice girlie! You are very smart:)

  129. It is ironic that those of us who have dedicated our lives to advocating for people to take their health in their hands need a reminder to “put our oxygen masks on first”. Taking care of yourself is so foundational. As a digestive health expert I eat right and exercise but true rest is often missing in my life. I am so busy building my business and helping others that I am vacation deprived. What a great reminder and inspiration to take a good long break. Thank you.

  130. AnnMarie says:

Perfect. I bought the crazy sexy diet book, then a juicer and I am about to embark on the 21 day adventure cleanse. I’m scared I won’t make it through – I always sabotage myself. But I need this in my life right now and am trying to put myself first. My special needs son, stressed out husband and busy bee daughter drained me a long time ago and I need to carve out a little bit of life for me. Thanks Kris 🙂

  131. Ellen says:

I read this terrific post after reading an article about Marian Wifht Edelman, who founded the Children’s
Defense Fund 40 years ago. Another wonderful woman who does so much for others. A quote from her husband, Peter: “She’s definitely always moving at warp speed, except when she’s not. She takes care to stop all the engines and sit still for some minutes every day and to pray and meditate, and so I think that’s the only way she makes it possible to continue to move at a very, very fast pace.” Great advice from Kris and a a role model in Ms. Edelman!

  132. Carole says:

Thanks Kris for continuing to help others. I’ve shared this post with my friends. It’s so important to care of ourselves.

  133. Berto says:

Thanks for all of the awesome tips, Kris! I really enjoyed Prevention Month.

  134. Janie says:

You are absolutely right, and you described my life – the hectic, over-extended, too little sleep, too much to drink, not enough good food life. I know what I need to do, even do it sometimes, but my life is not really my own right now, dealing with moving my mother to assisted living, packing up ALL her stuff in another state, working to put together an artist’s convention, trying to keep my marriage healthy- I’ve got the best husband! That is just a little slice of my life right now.

I feel as if I’m whiny and complaining, but sometimes I need to get it off my chest. Kris, your advice is beautiful! Thank you so much. It is because of people like you who give so much love out to the world that I don’t give up! I’ll keep reading your words, along with my other inspirational friends and live a good, healthy life.

    Thank you!!!

  135. Tracy says:

This has come at exactly the right moment for me – thanks Kris! I’ve been experiencing the beginnings of some recurring anxiety tummy pain issues and know this means I’ve stayed in an unhealthy situation for way too long. Time for a big dish of self love!

A great reminder, and a gentle kick in the pants we all need from time to time.

  136. Jenni says:

everyone needs to see this Kris. Bravo for sharing and thank you for your transparency.

  137. Oh Kris! You are an inspiration like no other! I am so grateful for you…. yet, I’m struggling to find words that express the gratitute I have for all that you have brought to my life. I absolutely love each and every post you share, I love that you share your heart and soul and that you give us tools to love our own mind, body & soul – and tools that help us grow, evolve and nuture who we are. Thank you for being you and sharing you with us…. you are an amazing inspiration. Thank you so much! 🙂

    BIG hugs
    Catherine xox

  138. V says:

    Dearest Kris,
I just spent a weekend visiting my college age daughter, and she is exactly on this downward spiral. I’ve been there…it’s no picnic. She has a big heart and has over-committed herself. Thank you for sharing a healthy game plan for getting back on track. Thank you for providing the kind words to even approach this subject with my precious daughter. Thank you for making such a daunting task so simple… fresh air, sweat, clean food, and sleep.
I know that it is up to my daughter to make the healthy changes. I do so appreciate your practical tips for self-care, and inspirational words that encourage me to model a healthy and happy lifestyle.
