Crazy Sexy Spring Picks for Health & Happiness

April 15, 2013|40Comments|

Hi Sweet Friends,

I don’t know about you, but the warm breeze and little sprouts on the trees are putting a refreshing spring in my step. Lately, I have been searching for clever and healthy ways to add more brightness to my days, whether it’s with non-toxic cleaners for my dusty bookshelves, a do-it-yourself project or planning my first vegetable garden (cucumbers galore!).

Where do I go to get the juices flowing? Pinterest! Though I’m still new to the magical world of pinning, it’s shockingly fun and totally addictive. I find more handy/helpful creations and delicious recipes than I know what to do with.

So today I’m keeping things light and bright by sharing digital tidbits that bring a smile to my face. I hope these ideas get you jazzed for a splendid Spring.

My top ten picks for health & happiness this spring

1. Follow this wise kitty’s self-care code. Living a balanced life might be easier than you think. In less than two minutes, Breton the adorable cat, will show you his simple strategies and guide you through everything you need to know to create your own plan. Watch!

2. Blend your way to green juice. I can’t count the number of times I’ve received an email from someone who wants to know if it’s possible to make green juice with their blender. Luckily, my friend Gena broke down the process in this step-by-step guide. Now it’s even easier for everyone to enjoy a glass of greens everyday.

3. Practice safe spring cleaning. A winter’s worth of sneaky dust bunnies and cobwebs are awaiting attack at my casa. I’m finally learning how to make my own cleansers and this non-toxic, citrusy, easy homemade cleaner recipe is versatile and smells delightful.

4. Make old things new. Earth Day is right around the corner and what better way to lighten your earth-print than UPcycling? I didn’t realize how many possibilities there were for renovating my old junk until I saw these 50 creative and useful ways you can upcycle your stuff.

5. Be veg-savvy. Do your fresh fruits and vegetables end up in the trash rather than your plate more than you’d like to admit? These eight ways to save money and keep your produce fresh will help you cut costs — but not health or flavor.

6. Green your thumb. Here’s an awesome overview of how to plant your own flowers and vegetables just in time for spring. We’ll be referencing these tips, tricks and advice as we start our first garden at the farmette this year.

7. Lean in to loving plants. I forget sometimes that vegetables can be intimidating at first. Focusing on one main veggie at a time can make transitioning to a plant-happy kitchen easier. Start now by checking out these 11 Unbelievably Awesome Uses for Cauliflower.

8. Detox your makeup bag by phasing out harmful products and phasing in non-toxic, cruelty-free ones. These days it’s much easier to shop smarter. And you don’t have to sacrifice looking great in the process! Get started by checking out this eye-opening Toxic Cosmetics Infographic.

9. Embrace your inner child (we could all learn a lot from them). This little plant-based chef made me smile from ear to ear. If this kiddo can whip up something special in the kitchen, and have a blast doing it, you can too! Life’s a lot more fun when we stop taking ourselves so seriously (in the kitchen and beyond).

10. Adopt! A furry friend is a constant reminder to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air, making spring the purrrfect time to adopt an animal. If you’ve been considering adoption, go to Petfinder.com and discover your new best friend (and hiking buddy) today. Come on, you know you want to click that link.

Can you add to my list? Share what’s inspiring you to lead a healthier, happier life this spring in the comments. And, are you on Pinterest? If so, we’d LOVE to see your board!

Peace & pins,

Kris Carr

  3. Get moving with a body awareness practice! Pilates, Yoga and NIA are great ways to get fit while learning to be more present in our bodies. Good for the body, mind and spirit all at the same time!

  4. Thanks for the fun tips Kriss!

#10 Adopting an animal means having a companion for many many years. Make sure you can commit to being its forever home!

  5. The blender juice question really does come up a lot! This list is great. Thanks for all the helpful tips!! :)

  6. Great tips Kris :)

I found a good tip on pinterest for a natural weed killer the other week. Just mix 2 liters (3.5 pints) of white vinegar with half a cup of salt. Put it in a spray bottle and spray it on the weeds. If you don’t mind a little bit of chemicals you can also add a squirt of dish washing liquid… apparently it makes the results last longer. I sprayed the weeds between my paving stones and within a few days they died.

For best results, spray in the morning when it’s going to be a warm day.

  7. Ohhhh so many great tips, Kris! And just like Pinterest – I don’t know where to begin or when to stop – I LOVE IT ALL! :-)

  8. Hi Kris,

What inspires me to lead a healthier, happier life is YOU. :) But you are right, Pinterest is a great place for inspiration. I am just starting out on Pinterest myself and found a lot of things I want to try to make like a Bug Home for my garden.

    My pinterest board is: http://www.pinterest.com/bullesmolecules

  9. Kris, Thanks for the great tips! :) I like it!

  10. Kris,

I adore these tips. Regarding the toxicity of cosmetics, you may want to check out (if you haven’t already, because you’re fabulous like that) oil cleansing for your face. I just started doing it with fabulous results.

I got the recipe from For The Love Of Food blog, but basically you use a mixture of castor oil and cold-pressed EVOO, rub it into your face (which removes make-up!), put a warm washcloth over your face to steam it for one minute, and then wipe off.

My skin isn’t breaking out and it’s softer than ever. All without a single chemical.

Next up – baking soda shampoo and vinegar conditioner. I’m on a quest to completely detox what I put on my body, since I’m getting better about what I put in my body.

    Big hugs!

    Dawn

  11. Hi! Love the tips and articles. Spring is here in North Ga. and can I just say “Yippee!” I have started my seeds for growing in my organic garden and that is so inspiring to me. My green smoothies have changed up a bit with the warmer weather tickling at me. More tropical and adventuresome! I get inspiration from teaching and sharing my learned knowledge of organic gardening, healthy plant-based eating and recipes (gluten-free), healthy cooking classes in my home, DIY natural based skin care recipes and more, and whatever life throws my way! I am open to miracles and THAT motivates and inspires me!

Of course, my three dogs are huge inspirations every day – to live in the NOW and let go of things that don’t serve me. Animals are such amazing teachers.

Thanks for your inspiring posts, Kris! You are a beacon of light and rainbows!

    • I have been sponsoring a child in Thailand since 2008. Since then, I correspond with the child by writing letters. I often insert bookmarks, cards, stickers and little gifts that can enter in a flat envelop, Every time I receive a letter from my sponsored child, it brighten my day. Child sponsoring is such a great way to help people in need and in the same time inspire me to a happier life. I sponsor my child with Compassion Canada, but there are a lot of organizations like this.

  30. I can feel your enthusiasm oozing from your posts, its great to read. Recently I discovered Pinterest, its a really good way of finding bloggers and new sites. There is a danger though of spending far too long browsing, a few minutes quickly becomes an hour or more.

  31. Just recently started detoxing my makeup bag. I would love to find a natural deodorant that works well (I live in Texas and it gets HOT here). I tried the natural crystal deodorant last year but it began irritating my skin. I ended up going back to the old Dove stick, which contains aluminum (eek) : ( I would love to switch to a natural, aluminum free product. Does anyone have any suggestions, that work really well and keep you smelling fresh at the end of a hot day?
    Thanks!!
